It's good to have two. That way you have some flexibility when it comes to arraging your room, even if you don't use them all. They fill up faster than you'd think when you've got lamps, computers, printers, fans, phones, microwaves, refridgerators, etc. plugged in. Astronomy sounds like it'd be a great class; hopefully I'll be able to fit it into my schedule somewhere down the road. I love that sort of stuff. Tell him to check in on IHST every once and a while if he's really interested; people drop classes all the time.

Also, I'd make the very strong suggestion that they loft their beds. It gives you much more room when you can put the desks under the beds.
