I have a daughter who went to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology choose to go to VT because of the awesome scholarship opportunities they gave her.
|
Oh yea? Tech isn't going to give her the opportunity to interview with bulge bracket investment banking firms, white-shoe consultancies, trading firms, and other highly-selective employers. Tech also won't offer the same degree of high-end thinkers and doers that UVA would. But I guess she probably knows enough winners from HS that she'll do alright.

How many UVA students can say that most of their college is paid for?

A college education isn't a commodity like milk or eggs. There's a value to attending a well-endowed, competitive school. Does that mean you should spend $200k to go to Duke over UVA? Maybe not. But UVA for $60k over Tech for free? Maybe.

I also know of a neighbor who DID NOT get in to the exclusive Architecture program at Tech who ended up at UVA.

Whatever, anyone who's considering Tech for architecture didn't get into Yale, Rice, Cooper Union, or another powerhouse.

I am sure that VT LOVES to make fun of UVA during football season

Tech has a relatively mediocre athletics program. UVA's is in the top 10 in the Director's Cup.
The comraderie that exists between the two schools is fine. As far as I'm concerned, there is no rivalry. A rivalry can really only exist between peer schools, and UVA and VT are different schools that serve different purposes.
