I can't speak for what will happen now with a new Supe...but I can tell you what Class of 2010 legacy folk experienced. You have to know that we had no idea there were 'perks'. At Plebe Parent Weekend we got a special invitation to a party at the Alumni House - open only to Alumni and legacy families. We met many legacy families including Sharon Disher - who has twins in 2010. Sharon is one of the original female class, and wrote "First Class". We also received and attended the Superintendant's Home for a private breakfast. Only the highest ranking friends and Academy folk and legacy parents attended. I never dreamed we'd be invited to spend about 2 hours in the Supe's home as lowly Plebe parents. Neither did hubby. But I enjoyed relaxing in the family room having a one on one time with Admiral Rempt's wife. I looked over all her family photos and we talked about each one. I also had never been in the presence of that much military brass from every single branch of the military - clearly up from Wash DC for the breakfast party. Then both at PPW and again at Hernon Week legacy parents get special seating assignments for the formal dress parade. We sat in comfortable shade with pre-seating relaxation instead of beating the crowds for a good seat. We met up with many legacy families under the canopy.
I have to say I enjoyed this - and yes, it's a perk - but I will never make that an issue with other families. I know that 'pride comes before a fall' and the last thing I want to do is sound like a boasting idiot.
I am simply answering that - in the past- at times USNA went out of their way to honor legacy families and while I appreciated the honor - if it never happens again we will be just as happy, just as grateful and just as proud of our daughter and her decision to attend USNA and serve our great country.
Oh....and if a mid has ANY brains at all - this whole 'legacy' thing is NEVER MENTIONED by them. Any hint of bilgeing one's classmates would be immediately dealt with. My kiddo never mentions it . It comes in the same category if a mid came with either prior enlisted experience, or NAPS or ROTC or came from a steller CAP or JrROTC background. No one cares about your past - it's the NOW that counts so the basic attitude is: shut up and do what you're told to do
I have no idea if the Cadre knows these facts about their charges. I am in contact with one former Class of 2007 Cadre - it's an interesting question to ask sometime.
