There's this book that's considered one of the first (and most important) GLBT books in American literature called The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall. As the title suggests, it gets a big angsty, but for the most part it's really not. Plus, it was written in the 1920s, so the angst is a little different anyway. It's a pretty good book, and very interesting if you consider the time period it was written in/takes place in.
