My son was asked to join as a freshman when my daughter was a junior. She had just been passed up for National Honor Society and I felt badly for her, so (thinking it was probably just a money-making endeavor) I crossed out my son's name, put in my daughter's, and sent off the "application" with my $45 check. In return we received a pretty certificate and a press release for the newpaper announcing my daughter's induction. We chuckled about how meaningless membership in either organization is (at least in our town NHS is meaningless).
