(from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama Handbook)

THE CASTING POOL
Chosky Theater -- Productions for the mainstage are primarily cast from eligible senior students from the casting pool.

Rauh Studio Theater -- Productions for the Studio are primarily cast from eligible junior students and available seniors from the casting pool.

A student's eligibility for the casting pool, directing and stage managing responsibilities will be determined by the Drama faculty based on:
the student's standing in their course work.
the student's ability to meet the challenge of the production based on his/her development .
the student's successful completion of University core requirements (English, History, CSW) by the beginning of the Junior year.

Note that it says "mainly" cast from Junior and Senior actors. There is a possibility that freshman and sophomores could get cast. In addition, there are grad and undergrad student directed shows. Each grad students direct 6 shows during their 3 years and each undergrad directs 2. So the opportunity to perform in student directed shows is also a possibility.
