Hey,
What studios? That makes a considerable difference. Here are my thoughts:
MSM
-Tim Cobb: in my opinion, the top teacher in the world. I studied with him so of course I'm biased, but Tim's first-class in every respect. He is a great teacher and a great player and a nice man. You can't go wrong studying with him.
-Jeremy McCoy: it will be his first year teaching at MSM in 2009, but he is fantastic and also would be a great person to study with.
-Orin O'Brien: great, great teacher and player. I haven't studied with her so I can't make many comments.
BU
-Ed Barker: a lot like Tim. He's amazing - great player and teacher and nice person.
Choosing between BU and MSM would be more of a choice between going to a conservatory or university.
-Todd Seeber: if your friend plays German bow, studying with Todd would be great. He's a very good teacher and player, too.
NEC
-Larry Wolfe: the nicest guy on the planet and a great teacher and player. Very solid choice of school and studio.
Peabody
-the school is fluctuating right now, but if your friend wants to get lessons with Hal Robinson, it would be a good choice. Compared to the other schools though, Peabody wouldn't be a good choice (according to me anyway).
Without knowing studios, I think my choice would be:
1 MSM with Cobb
2 BU with Ed
3 NEC with Larry
4 MSM with Jeremy
5 BU with Todd
6 MSM with Orin
7 Peabody
