Thanks, Beastman, for your post. I'm really getting nervous with all those references to BS BME being a "waste of time". It will be a major expense and an extremely difficult geographic change for our son to obtain a BS BME, but it's what he really wants to do. It's very tempting to "make him go" to a southern state school that he could probably get a free ride to, but if he, as was mentioned above, is burned out after a BS, all he'll be able to do is be a EE or ME, or whatever degree he obtains, which is really not what he wants to do. He really wants to be a BME. If he goes on for his master's, fantastic. But it would be great if he could get a job right out of college if he wants to go that route.
