Thomas... I plan on driving this year, but I know lots of people who flew in (including my roommate, who flew in from California). First, check with your airline... many airlines only allow you to check two bags and carry on one... and the carry one must be substantially smaller. And yes, the two checked bags must be under 50 lbs. Perhaps your airline has different requirements, but in my flying experience I've only ever been allowed to bring two.
If I were you, I'd try to bring all of the clothes you'll want in your suitcases, and then cram in whatever little things you can. If you're flying with your parents, if they can pack lightly and bring stuff for you in their bags that would also help. You can always make a run to Target, Wal-Mart, etc when you're here (they're kind of far away... you may need to rent a car though) and pick up all of the bits and pieces you'll need as basic living supplies.
I know that this is the approach my roommate took, and he basically was able to fit everthing he needed except a refrigerator and microwave, which he bought out here
