Is it too small?

I am serioulsy looking into ASC, but I am worried that perhaps it is too small?

How safe is the area? I have never been to Atlanta, or the South, and I am worried that as a So/Cal girl it might be a bit of culture shock. Any help would be great.

Agnes Scott is a small college but that will mean smaller classes, more one on one instruction and support from professors, better opportunities to "shine".

The college is in Decatur which has it's urban "elements" (meaning use your common sense about going out after dark, etc....) But Decatur (city) is also a very up and coming (rennovated area) with condos being built (in the 200,000 to over 400,000 dollar range...which coming from CA might not sound expensive, but in Atlanta it is) - most people who live in the "square" area feel realively safe there. There are shops, couple of small clubs, restaurants, a library, MARTA, post office, banks, hospital and churches all within walking distance from Agnes Scott. It's a cute community.

From what I understand, AS students socialize with students from GA Tech and Emory as well. I think if you are outgoing enough you would find plenty to do.

There are also opportunites for interships (new arrangement with the CDC if you are medicallly inclined).

Thank you for your help. I know that the academics at Agnes are top notch, but I am just worried about actually LIVING in the Atlanta area.

Is the campus gates or have 24 hour security? What do you mean by the "square?"

Do the guys at Emory have connections with the Agnes girls? Is it common to see Scotties dating Georgia Tech and Emory guys?

Thanks again for your help!

Let's see, first of all I believe their security is 24 hours. Dorms are locked, there are "call buttons" around campus with easy access if you are out walking. The security station is next to the parking garage. I live in Atlanta and honestly, I haven't heard of any security problems at Agnes Scott (or Emory or Tech for that matter...I have heard of a couple at Georgia State and University of Georgia)

The square is the little town of Decatur (the heart of the town) which is within walking distance to Agnes Scott - I have asked both the college reps AND the students about safety of walking from the campus to the square and I've been assured that it is safe. (Although if it is at night, use you judgement and go in groups). On the square (which is really several streets that criss cross each other) there are all the things I mentioned before. As far as restaurants, there is MICKs (more upscale), Ruby Tuesdays (casual dining, chicken fingers, burgers and such), Atlanta Bread Company (soups and sandwitches, coffee, etc...) a noodle bowl place, a beer joint, Starbucks, ice cream parlor, I think a Subway...and there are probably others I can't remember. There is a little breakfast place that is supposed to be good too. The city of Decatur has events thoughout the year too (book festival, movie at the beach (they put out sand), 4th of July festival, stuff like that.

As far as dating, I really don't know. In the past, I have know AS girls who socialize with Tech guys, but I'm just not sure how often this occurs now. I would think that if you were a little outgoing, you would meet people from other schools. Plus those condos at the Decatur Square will have some young professionals in them (I know because an insane friend of mine bought both of her children a condo each - one young guy and one young (20 something) girl.) Decatur also has a larger than average gay community- mostly lesbian. But it is not in your face - it's just life there and sometimes you will see a same sex couple (as you will in most cities) mixed in with all the other couples.
