I was a student there years ago and continue to be active in the life of the school. I think it depends on what your daughter is looking for and expects from college. Fit is always most important, and ASC is certainly different from most colleges. Obviously it's a college for women (NOT a "girl's school!") and that can be either a turn off or intriguing. Let me say that because it is located in the very hip Decatur area and just a 15 minute drive from urban Atlanta, it offers a lot of social possibilities. However, if you are not outgoing and want your social life to come to you right on campus, you'll find opportunities limited. Yes, there are plenty of clubs and activities, but the campus is fairly quiet. Not a party scene on school grounds but I never wanted for fun. The GREAT thing about a women's college is the absolute dedication of the school to the success and growth of the women who attend. It is learning with women's unique interests and needs in mind. No wonder women's colleges account for less than 2% of graduates nationally, but in terms of leaders in business, medicine, and government they account for a massively disproportionate number. That alone is a reason most young women should consider going to a college FOR women.
Nearly everyone lives on campus. The dorms are very special, voted palaces in most national polls. I loved my rooms. Great professors who truly care about you. I still get calls from a couple of mine when they find something that they think will be of interest to me, or want to invite me to sit in on an interesting lecture. Excellent science program with a high rate of acceptance to med-schools (well over 95%) and other graduate programs. I found my master's program following graduation from ASC to be a breeze in comparison.
Good food with women's tastes in mind! Nice student center, but a better fitness center would be nice. Sports are pretty secondary, but coming into their own. Basketball is hot and well supported at school and by the community at large, and a new Lacross program is just beginning.
Diverse student body, and diverse surrounding community. Fairly liberal, IMO. Affiliated with the presbyterian church, but not overly religious in tone on campus. Very beautiful surroundings. Love that students can cross register at a number of other local colleges and universities to take classes ASC doesn't offer.
Newly announced financial aid packages make it a very affordable place for many applicants. I believe a pledge of $64000 over 4 years.
