Bottom line: Don't go to the Academy JUST to fly
Go to the AFA for the whole picture, the academics, the lifestyle, the best fit for you. Don't go to just be a pilot. The education that they can offer is unique and outstanding. I am so proud to be an American b/c we have the SA's. I am happy to pay my tax dollars for these kids...they are truly the finest Americans we have. All of that being said, I hope that every cadet entering understands that not everyone can be a pilot and sometimes fate has a hand in your career.

Let me give you a scenario...you go b/c that is the best way to get a UPT slot..you get there and playing intermural football, you injure your back and now are medically dq for flying, yet you are not medically dq from the service, what do you do now? This happens

Second scenario, you graduate with a UPT slot and wash out...you still owe 5 yrs, what do you do now? Happens alot

Final scenario, while at the academy the AF decides to close down the pipeline, only the top 50% get UPT and you are not in that pool, what do you do now? You still owe 5 yrs AD. Happened in 91

I hope you get your dream of flying, but remember the dream you should be focusing on is the academy experience. Graduating from UPT for you is 6 yrs away with alot of hurdles to clear, instead spend the days daydreaming of what it will be like in 1 yr from now when you arrive at the AFA to become a Basic Cadet.

GOOD LUCK, WE ALL WANT YOU TO GET THERE, we also just want you to be realistic about the AF

HAPPY 4th! Thank you all for defending what the framers of this country put in place over 200 yrs ago!

Allergy shots are given to reduce your allergies. I used to be allergic to everything green. It was not dangerous, however I would get a bad rash if I came in contact with certain plants. The shots helped to cure it and now I have no allergies. I do not know if it was because of the shots or puberty or something else.

Taz be prepared to have medical paperwork to show you are no longer allergic. Dodmerb typically DQ's people who have a history of allergies, you will just need to get a waiver if they do...DON'T FRET...NOT A BIGGIE, just more paperwork!

For all new applicants...Dodmerb will do a thorough physical, head to toe and everywhere in between...plus review your medical history. If you have an issue, there is a great guy on United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin with the moniker MullenLe, he is directly involved with Dodmerb and can assist you in any and all questions. It is a seperate section under Dodmerb...just pose your question and he can assist you.

Allergy Immunotherapy Treatment (AIT, also know as "allegy shots") is not a DQ unless it is current or within the previous year.

You will most likely have to complete the Allergies Questionnaire.

Taz,

I agree with the other people who have posted. Work on your academics, high scores always look nice. However, that it not all admissions is looking for.

From my experience what they care about is the whole package. Your extracurricular looks good but you can always do more. More leadership and community service would be helpful. But remember this: it is not quantity admissions cares about, it is quality. Keep going in JROTC advance as much as you can there, it looks good to stick with something.

Also, contact your admissions rep and stay in touch. Tell them as soon as anything in your package changes. This will get your name stuck in their mind and will tell them you really want to go. Both very important. They need to know your name and packet so well they memorize it. All in all, the most important thing they are looking for it heart, someone who will graduate no matter the cost; this will show them you have it.

Good luck and i hope to invite you into the Cadet Wing.

I've taken allergy pills from like age 8 till 16. Will I be DQ'd?

It was just seasonal stuff. Occasionally I'd get a runny/itchy nose, but nothing bad.

Unlikely. However i am not qualified to answer medical questions. You can go to serviceacademyforums.com where there is a DoDMRB representetive answering questions about medical DQ's and the like. That would be a good place to get accurate information.
