Summer Seminar

If you got in Summer Seminar this summer, does anyone know your odds of getting an appointment? Of getting an early appointment?

It doesn't hurt. Demonstrates your interest in the Academy. Many of the cadets on this board attended SS. Doesn't make you a shoe in, but you are traveling the right path for admission. In order to get into SS you had to demonstrate some of the qualities the Academy is looking for. Your job now is to maximize those qualities (good GPA, AP classes, good SAT scores, solid CFA, leadership and sports.)

About half those attending summer seminar end up going to the Academy and that group (~400) makes up about a third of the entering class.

"About half those attending summer seminar end up going to the Academy"

I had seen the above statistic but wondering about the other half - did they just decide AFA was not for them after SS or just not get appointments? Basically, trying to find out if you went to SS and then still wanted to attend the AFA, what are the odds of you getting an appointment?

I suspect a number opt to attend another Service Academy while some decide it's not for them.

I would guess summer seminar attendees and recruited athletes form the "base" of the entering class. And it always it needs to be said that those not selected for summer seminar still have a shot - AFA summer seminar has less attendees compared to USNA and USMA.

Why do you think the above happens?

Wow! Does the USNA appoint more than the USAFA?

My son is only interested in the USAFA, went to summer seminar this summer, and got his candidate kit the first part of July. Medical is scheduled for next Monday and ALO interview the next Monday. He will then have everything in but writing samples (which he is working on) and CFA. He did fine on CFA at SS so that should not be a problem. We can then start on MOC nominations. One letter said "we will let your MOC know of our interest in you". I assume that is for all ones deemed candidates.

Interesting that posters here talked about interviews with ALO for summer seminar. We never did that or was even told to even look into that.

He loved SS - in fact Doolie for a Day was his favorite day (which is saying alot since they got to fly T-6 Texan simulators). He has been around the Corps at Texas A&M alot as my nephew is part of ENJJFT and is training on F-16s at Luke AFB. Therefore, I think he had a good idea of what would probably happen on Doolie Day. Much the same for freshman at Texas A&M.

aggie he is on track. Get the package complete as early as possible it will allow him to be reviewed in late Sept/early Oct for admission. If the package is solid enough he could recieve an early offer of admission. This is known as an LOA and helps during the congressional nominations.

As for the summer seminar numbers the Academies all have a mandated class size. I do not recall the exact number but around 1300. AF does have less slots, but that may have more to do with location in the west. Travel from east coast sities can be expensive.

The USAFA SS letter we got said they took 700 total this summer. The press release they sent to our high school said 2100 applied and 700 were accepted.

Yes - getting an LOA would be absolutely wonderful to be able to know and not have to wait until March. However, with the discussion here of only 100-200 LOAs that might be wishful thinking. Still we will get all our stuff done and in before Sept. 1. Thanks for your replies.

To be exact, the above numbers were 760 and 2060. That's what I get trying to recall something from memory.

I'm an ALO...been one for 13+ years.

I'd be happy to answer any questions any of you might have, dispel any rumors, etc.

I know this isn't exactly the topic, and that all cadets and cadre are busy with BCT, but does anyone know when we can expect to get our picture slide shows and video from Sum Sem?
