How do you know if Allegheny is right for you?

Hey,

I've just been accepted to Allegheny, and received a scholarship. I applied here because I heard that the science departments are very well taught, and the acceptances to those who apply to med school are quite high. I live in Washington State, clear across the country, and am not sure if this school is right for me.

Can anyone give me some input on why or why not you may not like the school? What is it best for?

My daughter likes Allegheny because it has a good history department, nice campus, good internship and study abroad opportunites (she's got her eye on one in particular), and will offer a very traditional college experience.

Have you visited Allegheny?

No, I haven't visited Allegheny. I'm planning to major in biology, and to enter the medical field. I heard that the acceptance rate to those who apply to med school from Allegheny is relatively high, so that is a major statistic that caught my attention.

Allegheny does have strong sciences and a good medical school acceptance rate. As you know, it is a smaller college. The faculty is very accessible, most classes are reasonably small. Students stay on campus on weekends. They have Greek, but it doesn't dominate things.

Is it the right school for YOU? That is a tough question since we know nothing about you. It rains a lot in Meadville, but if you are from the northwest that may not be an issue for you. It also snows a lot in the winter. Meadville is a small town of 16,000. The campus is located on the edge. There is not a lot of culture or shopping in Meadville. The town is pleasant. It is difficult to get to Pittsburgh or Cleveland. If you or a friend have a car, road trips to Erie are available. There is plenty to do on campus and if you are not after the urban scene, then you should be fine there. They have an excellent outing club if you are into the outdoor stuff. What exactly are you looking for in a college besides a strong science department and a good crack at med school?
