Hey I was wondering if this looks like what Allegheny is looking for at all for music/creative writing majors:

GPA: 4.19 weighted (going to rise)
3.88 unweighted (same)
Rank: 32/317 (getting better..it's in the 20's now)
SAT: (they're not fair)..writing 610, crit reading 520, math 550.
ACT: June 10th, not taken yet.
9th grade i took almost all honors (I have 3 B's on my transcript), 10th grade i took 2 honors, this year (11) i took 1 ap and 4 honors and have all A's (one b+). From 10th grade on, I have all A's on the transcript. Next year, I am taking 4 AP's (2 AP and 2 ap weighted honors) and 1 actual honors honors.

Extracurriculars: People to people student ambassador program, national youth leadership conference (possibly--next summer), glsen (helps teach others about diversity), junior mendelssohn choir, voice lessons, piano lessons, cantoring for my rabbi, jazz choir, chamber choir (most elite), and many others that I can't think of.

Your GPA and rank are great for Allegheny. The test scores, however... could be better. If you can get your M+V to 1200 or over, or equivalent in ACT, then you should have an excellent chance. Try contacting admissions and ask how heavily they consider test scores. Good luck on the ACT!

thanks!! I mean, if i do well on the ACT, i'm not taking the sat again...b/c i feel like the sat was a horrible assessment of my knowledge, and actually i felt stupid after i took it.

hey i was a student ambassador and i went to that youth conference thing..i thought it was going to make me a shoe-in for all colleges but it doesnt really do too much..it looks like you have a good gpa though..i got in with much less than that

my SAT combined (m+v+w) was a 1600 so I would not worry tooo much. , but if you could take the ACT that would be good because it helped me. I got a 25 on it which converts to a 1700 so in actuality I brought my SAT scores up 100 points. I'm also got offered the leadership application and I knew within 2 weeks that I was accepted. I was pretty pleased.

u have good stats.. and you could help yourself by raising your SAT scores but don't sweat it. I think that Allegheny is looking for a lot more than just good scores. All ur other stuff is very concrete and i think u have more than a better chance of getting in..just do well on those ap exams.

Actually, most colleges (with some exceptions) do not put much of an emphasis on AP exam scores. In fact, if you are not satisfied with your exam scores, you can choose to have them withheld from your transcript. Colleges will place a greater emphasis on your grades in the actual AP classes than on the AP exams. With that being said, I think that you have a very good chance at admission into Allegheny. SAT scores aren't everything. You have challenged yourself by taking difficult courses, and it appears that you have done well in those courses. You also have a decent list of extracurriculars. Be sure to convey to Allegheny (and all other colleges to which you apply) your dedication to and passion for your extracurriculars.

yea i don't think you have much to worry about. I got admitted to allegheny with an 1150 (reading/math) sat score and i also got around 12k in scholarships...and according to the sat range for allegheny, my scores are at the minimum, so this goes to show that sat scores aren't everything. My gpa is about a 3.6 i'd say with an upward trend (9th + 10th grade i had around 3.3 gpa and 10th-11th i have around a 4.0 gpa) w/ a good mix of mostly honors and acouple APs throughout. I also have mostly music extracurriculars.

I have been accepted at Allegheny, too. But they said nothing about scholarship. Here is the letter I received lately:

Dear Cuong:

Your application for admission to Allegheny as an international student has been reviewed, and we find your academic preparation and achievement commendable. However, after careful consideration of your financial circumstances and of Allegheny?s limited financial aid resources, we find we shall be unable to provide you with the funds necessary to make your enrollment at the College realistic at this time. Allegheny does not have the scholarship dollars to allow you to enroll. At the same time, we recognize that you may have access to other resources to support your education here. If this is the case, we would be happy to discuss your future at Allegheny further.

To open that area of possibility, I have enclosed the Foreign Student Budget (Assumed Expenses for all International Students) and a Certification of Finances. If you wish to proceed with enrollment plans, you and your family must provide us with documentation of your ability to finance your educational experience at Allegheny. Upon receipt of this document, we would be happy to discuss your enrollment options.
