| gender balance in AU
I noticed that in AU, female students outnumber male students almost 2:1. Does this mean that a male applicant will get some "boost", even if it may be a minor one, in the admission game?

My bet is yes...but probably not enough for an unacceptable candidate to get pushed in over the line.

My bet is no. Admissions are to particular schools, and Kogod is majority male. The schools do have slightly different profiles.

Even with mini's point about schools aside, males do not seem to have an edge.
The overall admit rates for males and females are 48% and 56%, respectively.

If there was an edge for male applicants the ratio wouldn't be as skewed as it.

Perhaps, a lack of engineering school might explain this? Though, I must say in other colleges without engineering, I still don't see this level of imbalance.
In general, only engineering specific schools seem to show male as more than 50% of the student body. In others, either it's barely breaking even or in most case, more female than male in a significant way (close to 20% or more). Even within this group, AU stands out.
Is this because more girls than boys go to college?

I don't have an answer to your question as it pertains to AU. My son seems to think there are plenty of guys to do "guy things" with, but also enjoys the high ratio of young women. If you are truly interested in attending AU, I wouldn't let this stand in your way.

hello5,
I am a mom, just like you. AU seems to be a good target for my S2 who is a HS junior. I was just browsing here and there, and found the gender breakdown, and was curious....
S2 is interested in IR. how does your son like AU?

My S, too is an IR major (for now). From what he has told us, so far, he is enjoying his time at AU. He is getting along well with his roommates ( they have decided not to de-triple ), has no extreme experiences with unruly students on his floor, has seemed to find plenty to do that doesn't involve alcohol and is using the shuttle and metro to explore all over DC. I find it interesting, though, that after deciding against the GW campus, he was impressed that his friend from HS could walk to the White House, etc.
He has some profs that he likes more than others and an ok workload.
So far he seems to be adjusting well, which is all a parent can ask for at this point in time.

My son seems to be enjoying the gender imbalance.
Otherwise, he really likes 3 of his 4 classes (15 hours) and says the fourth is "ok." He admits he has imbibed once or twice but has found plenty else to do that does not involve alcohol...he liked the freedom and idea of it better than the reality.
