Hi, I'm a rising senior who's going to apply for college this year!
My scores are pretty decent, but there's nothing SUPER FANTASTIC or an eye-grabber for my EC
If you could chance me and give me some ideas on where I stand, I'd be really thankful



GPA - 4.95/5 (unweighted - our school doesn't have weighted scores)
ranking - top 10% (school doesn't have ranking system)

SAT - CR 770 MA 800 WR 800 (2370)
SAT II - Math II C 800, Literature & US History 750+ (predicted)
AP - Micro(5), Macro(5), Calculus(5), Chemistry(5), US History(4 - going to retake)
going to take US History, US GNP, Comparative GNP, English Literature, English Language, Psychology and Statistics this year

Mock Trial - club member, team captain, 2 Best Attorney Awards, 2 3rd-place Awards
(going for 1st-place this time, if succeed then will go to US Nationals)
Moot Court - Individual 5th place speaker
(going for competition again, if within top 6 then will go to US Nationals too)
MUN - Honorable Mention award, school delegate for THIMUN-Singapore
President of multicultural family tutor club - 150+ hours, awards for participation
Volunteer at refugee center - yet a sinecure, have to develop it more this year
Translation volunteer - miscellaneous club projects, Compassion (50+ hours)
Lacrosse - school junior varsity team member (few teams here, our school always wins)
Badminton - individual and team awards in school competition
Research project on aid agencies in Nepal - got published in government paper (was part of government teenager go-abroad project)

Interested departments (I'm a pre-law)
: History, Government and Politics, International Relations, Literature, Philosophy


I take criticism well, so please tell me how you really feel my application looks like
And I'd be really thankful if you could give advice on what I might do for my EC

That's the bad part here - I'm an international applicant, from East Asia no less. After spending some days on CC, I'm getting the feeling that colleges all think we're boring nerds Does my resume have Asian stamped all over it or something?? I'm actually afraid that my scores will prove me to be the typical Asian without personality. Would not reporting my ethnicity help me in the process??

You will need to fill in your ethnicity in the common application. Write an interesting essay on who you really are then if you don't want to be seen as the "typical" Asian.

SwedishChris, I think I read somewhere that I could choose not to report my ethnicity. Am I mistaken?? Also, could you guess from just my resume thay I was an Asian??

Yes you don't need to fill in your ethnicity. I couldn't guess that you are an Asian. Is your name Asian-sounding?

Well, I guess. It doesn't sound American, I think In that case, would it not matter whether or not I didm't report my ethnicity?

Don't get too worried about being Asian. there are tens of thousands of Asian and Asian-American kids who get into great schools. You have a very good chance to get in. Keep working hard. Write wonderful essays. Best of luck!

lol, that's really not true - not all Asians are bookworms, and not all bookworms are Asians. I mean, so many people here in CC have such wonderful specs, and a lot of them aren't Asian. It's just because a lot of Asian parents do care a lot about education that people got this odd image of us

99.9% of the kids who have great stats have parents that care a lot about education - regardless of their ethnicity.

I said "Asians who get the best scores", not "all Asians get the best scores in everything". There is a difference. I could have said "mental handicapped people who get the best scores" or "pigs who fly" and it wouldn't mean anything worth correcting.

Just because you guys want to sound politically correct doesn't mean all ethnicities have the same values and views on education (mostly referring to glido's comment here). I believe that Asian students in this college forum have generally higher scores than the rest and I think most of you would agree with me. Therefore, I said what I said. I have great respect for people who study hard, so I was not trying to be snide or anything.
