when my grandpa came to the usa from korea, apparently he was accepted at quite a lot of prestigious colleges (~1950s)... the reason he chose amherst was because it gave him the highest financial aid out of ALL the other colleges...

Actually, my EFC is less than 5000, and Amherst wants us to pay 22000. This is after appealing as well. We have a lot of savings, but those are really for my parents to retire on, and 22000 a year won't be easy, but--I don't know. I haven't made a decision yet.

Is Amherst trying to pull an NYU here?

My EFC is ~7,000, and I'm on the waitlist.
I can't imagine what my package would be like if I were taken off.

the same as it would be if you were accepted originally.

Advcomp, how did Amherst's package compare with other purely need-based schools?

I don't think they've gotten all the deposits yet.

Is it a good sign that there are only 299 members in the Amherst 2012 Facebook group?

The 2011 group has 386 members! I'm just hoping here.

My son was looking at the "class of 2012" on the part of the Amherst website that admitted students can access. (He'll be a freshman this fall.) He counted the list of names and he says it's 383. If that's true, I think there will definitely be some admits from the waitlist. I read that they were being conservative with the number of admitted students, and planning to use the waitlist to end up with just exactly the number they wanted -- so as to not repeat last year's over-enrollment. What was the magic number... like 420 or something like that? So waitlistees, hang in there and good luck.

My EFC was about 16,000 and I'm paying 10,000 for Amherst.

keep in mind that a good deal of the people enrolling at amherst probably sent in their response cards around may 1st. considering the admissions office isnt open on saturdays, and these names have to be manually entered into the computer, theres a good chance that many of these names are yet to be entered. there will probably be at least 20 students added to the database today. fyi the ideal class size they were aiming for is 440, but who knows they might try to make this year smaller as they had overenrollment problems last year. my prediction is that about 30 or so kids willl make it off the waitlist which is a ton for amherst.

"As of today on my D's class website they are showing 412 as of this morning."

112+ students who don't use Facebook? Outrageous.

"My EFC was about 16,000 and I'm paying 10,000 for Amherst."

My family's EFC is 7,000, and we're going to have to pay 25,000 for Middlebury.

I really, really hope I get off that waitlist >_>
