Diversity Open House Weekend

Has anyone who has applied to the diversity open house weekend heard anything back form the college yet?

I mailed mine in like 2 days after I got the letter, so I'm not even sure when the actual deadline for it was. Which means, I have no idea when to be expecting a response.

Just wanting to know if anyone is in the same boat...

We were wondering a bit, too, but I think the deadline to apply is sometime in August, so maybe they won't make decisions until then...?

DD attended the September DIVOH last fall, and if I remember correctly, she didn't get notified until 2 weeks before she went.

Thanks, GA2012MOM. That helps to take some of the pressure off. How did your DD like it? Did she end up applying/going to Amherst?

Thanks so much for the applies!

I sent in my application way back in May or June, so it feels like I have been waiting forever. I am really excited for this weekend, so hopefully I will be able to go!

Glad to hear that your daughter enjoyed the weekend and the school so much, GA2012MOM.

My daughter attended two years ago and is now a rising sophomore at Amherst. I can recall the wait in learning whether she was accepted or not. Please be patient. Some students learn of their acceptances before others (we're in California and some kids in New York heard before my daughter so she was sure she wasn't accepted). She did get accepted and this trip resulted in her deciding to attend Amherst. It's a big deal if you get accepted to the Diversity Open House because it means Amherst is really interested in your application (and is willing to pay your way to see the campus). We had already visited the campus but it was in the summer when school was not in session. It makes a big difference to live in the dorm, meet current students, sit in classes and see the town of Amherst when all of the college students are around. Good luck to all of you. Amherst is awesome!

If they want you, they will make it happen one way or another. Good luck and I hope you get a chance to experience Amherst.

Just found acceptance letter, it was Sept. 7, for DIVOH starting the 29th, so it was 3 weeks, not 2.

My D also received an invitation to apply to the diversity weekend. She is thrilled, since she loves Amherst, and will be applying in the next couple of months.

I was curious, though, as to why she would have been invited. We visited Amherst a couple of weeks ago, but since they don't do interviews, I don't think they have a record of that visit. She has "pressed the button" on the website to receive information from the school, and she had her ACT scores sent to Amherst.

One would of those actions have prompted the diversity weekend invitation? Assuming she was invited because of her race, I'm not sure how they even know that.

She will be absolutely ecstatic if she is accepted for this event!

This isn't a race specific program. Lots of white students are also invited. I assume my daughter was targeted because of her PSAT scores (since she was invited to a special meeting of Amherst, Williams and Weselyan prior to the invitation to the diversity open house). So, she was targeted. She is African American but we aren't low income and pay full tuition. So, the students who are invited cover a lot of "diversity" categories. Some is race, income, geographical location and other characteristics that would make the student desirable to Amherst. My daughter was invited to other institutions as well. But, the Diversity weekend really sold my daughter on Amherst. She applied early decision and was accepted.

Thanks, Impw. I'm guessing then that my D was targeted because of her ACT scores - which were good but not stellar. I can't imagine why else she would have received this unsolicited invitation. Puzzling, but grateful!
