i hate it that there's a word limit of 500 in the supplement. Did anyone have a similar problem of limiting his/her response?

Isn't it a suggested word limit? I've gone over by at least a 100 words.

I hate word limits too. Couldn't write everything that I wanted.
Anyway, I exceeded my essay by around 20 words, but I guess that shouldn't be much of a problem right?

i don't think that 20 would be much of a problem.

Hey everyone,
I applied to Amherst ED on Monday. I got my confirmation from the commonapp that my stuff was sent, however I still have not received confirmation from Amherst. Is this usual for the early decision rush?

I'm thinking about applying RD to Amherst but the viewbook sort of disappointed me... How, how, how could they make a 1000 acre campus look so claustrophobic? =( I have a friend who goes to Amherst but they never got around to telling me what exactly makes Amherst so awesome and different to every other big LAC. Can someone please fill me in?

The 1000 acres includes a big chunk of wildlife reserve. The residence halls and classroom buildings are mostly clustered together. Not cramped, but close enough you can get from place to place easily. I think that's a very nice thing, but it sounds like you maybe want a bigger school all around. More space, more people? Amherst is quite small and cozy feeling. If that's not to your taste, then Amherst will definitely not suit you.
I have one kid at Amherst and one at a large state university. They are both in environments that suit them, very different ones.

Oh, that makes sense! I like close-knit, small communities where people know each other and get along well. I really don't like crowds and cities. However, I also like wide-open, airy surroundings and a lot of personal space. I saw some photos of the dorms, and they looked quite small... My friend gets sexiled all the time! hehe. I just heard that 500 acres of Amherst is a wildlife preserve, which sounds really wonderful. Lots of space to walk around in and get lost for fun!
I've been told that Amherst has something for everyone, but is there a kind of person who won't fit in well?

^^^^^
The dorms are not small, and the Freshman dorms are exceptionally nice.
Amherst just beat Williams, 8-0 for the season!

I guess my friend, who lives at Charles Pratt (apparently the best freshman dorm?), took crappy pics of the rooms then Everything looked a bit small and dark, so I was slightly put off :S But the outdoors are absolutely beautiful!

My kid's freshman dorm was quite nice, but it was pretty small. Charles Pratt may or may not be the "best" freshman dorm, but it is the newest and flashiest. I have heard some kids find a stronger sense of community in the older dorms that are, at least in their public areas quite a bit smaller. I don't know though. All the freshman dorms are *very* nice, but I've never really understood making dorms a big criterion in picking a college... I mean, aside from expecting them to be warm, safe, and basically functional. But people are different and want different things.

hehe. I know that dorms are a minor issue in picking a college, but I have a slight claustrophobic tendency :S I need space, lots of space and lots of light... Otherwise I feel down and sluggish and don't get my work done...

You might want to consider schools where more students live off-campus, especially after freshman year.

Are there any top-ranked universities/LACs like that in Massachusetts or on the east coast? In the ones I've come across so far, students tend to live on campus. I don't want to give up community but neither do I want to give up personal space :S
