When you get your ID does it start out with any AC dollars on it?

You can add them by going to the office downstairs at Val (on the left when you walk in), with a cash or check. Add them AND have quarters handy because sometimes damaged machines won't take coins, and other times the cards don't work. Or you can do what I do and borrow quarters from friends and force them down the mouth of the machine at peril to your fingers...

I just put money on my daughter's card on the toll free number where you pay tuition. You can put the funds put on your card on this number if you have your student ID number.

I did the same. Call the toll free number (there is a $2 surcharge), but it was easy and convenient.
