| Does anyone know if there have been more people for which this has happened? I'm just curious how isolated this is. Oh, and does anyone know what this guy actually posted to get screwed over like this; was it very specific?
Also, reading a lot of the threads, like 99% of the people discuss what they put as answers, or what books they used for essays, is this allowed? since they aren't actually discussing what the question is, just their response to it. I'm a bit irrationally worried that discussing what I stated above is enough for me to get in trouble (since I did it a day after the test). |

| I really doubt this is a widespread thing. Seems one kid got caught. Think music piracy on a much much smaller scale. As I mentioned earlier, CB lacks the funds/time to persecute every one dancing around the regulations. Probably, if you posted a bunch of MC question or the whole FRQ section early you might get in trouble, but otherwise, relax.

| You guys are paranoid. Dont you know that it is ILLEGAL to track IP addresses unless you obtain a subpoena!? There is NO WAY a judge is going to grant collegeboard a subpoena for talking about AP questions. Subpoenas for this are usually granted only in cases of stalking, etc.... LOL gimme a break! You guys.... |

| Just thought I'd pitch in for a second, in reference to Miami Kid 88's post:
It isn't illegal to "track IP addresses" at all. It's a NUMBER. If I get your IP address and call your provider with a complaint (i.e. "this person is abusing my website"), they may give me your contact information. Depends on your agreement with them and such.
Uh. FYI. |

| ^ But the only way they'd be able to get your IP address in the first place is if CC supplies it, which CC already stated that it won't do. But if you post enough info, they might be able to track you down by your profile/posts. |

I'm not encouraging any of you to break the rules (though I do it all the time), but I just want you all to know that IP address does not hold in court. My brother was taken to court by SONY for downloading files illegally from Limewire, and the primary evidence that SONY used was IP Address. IP address isn't accurate, since people can use other hosts and connect to networks where IP Addresses are linked and crap. My bro of course countersued on the account of wasting his time due to false accusations, as well as due to the costs of paying for a lawyer...he won, end of case.
Three of my friends from school have also been taken to court, and they have also been able to easily and successfully shut down the IP address claim. However, if you don't bring the inaccuracy of an IP address to the court's attention, you will lose. So if you don't know, now you know.
| Unfortunately, College Board isn't taking you to court. Since they're a private organization (Or business, haha) they have every right to cancel the score.
I was skeptical of this incident at first, so I looked at the original thread. It seems to be valid, but an extreme case. The reason this poster was caught was because he/she revealed too much personal information. Obviously, this can be very easily avoided. Just choose a screenname with no relation to your real name, and avoid discussing anything about you, anything personal, or anything local. In a worst case scenario, deny all knowledge, and claim that someone framed you. I doubt Collegeboard tracked the person through IP. Rather, the person must have revealed himself through his postings, and then, when his principal threatened him, he pleaded guilty. Anyway, I do not endorse doing anything wrong or lying (Just saying to keep myself out of trouble). Bottom line is be careful. Obviously, posting a link to your myspace would be a huge no no. But the easiest thing is just to follow college board's rules, or don't post in a public internet forum where anyone can see what you posted and all the posts you have ever made. |
