| This is a hard question...and so not in my best area. I would have to say they encouraged it in an attempt to convert others to their religion (both believed that their religion was the only true religion if I remember correctly). I'm probably wrong though. |

| Karl Marx asserted, “Religion is the opiate of the masses.” Using one of the 5 major religions [Christianity], compare and contrast the role religion has played in promoting or impeding social change. Consider specific revolutions, texts, and religious leaders in answering the question.
How would you guys answer this essay prompt? Can you lead me in the right direction by answering the last sentence for me? |

| ^God help us all if we get that social prompt. :P Quote: |
Describe the ideas and feelings of both Christianity and Islam on trade/merchanting until about 1500
| That's a DBQ from a released exam, right? From what I remember reading, Christianity had a more negative view on it. Both were strict in forbidding dishonest trade (e.g. overcharging) and related practices. Over time, a more secular attitude was taken up toward trade for both religions. |

| Hmm maybe you could mention the Enlightenment (it's 1 am, I can't think of much right now)? You could discuss how the rejection of Aristotelian philosophy destabilized the church and how the church responded with the Inquisition. The Enlightenment is more intellectual, but it definitely impacted Europe socially.
The French Revolution is another potential topic. Talk about how initially the 1st Estate (clergy) and 3rd Estate got along, then the commoners' attempt to reform the Church led to conflict. |

Actually the Roman Inquisition was in response to the Protestant Reformation during the 16th century. Inquisition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Enlightenment ties in with the French Rev, which I will use in my essay. |

| Well for me, actually writing the eassy is easy because we do them in class all the time (we have a 50 minute class). My problem is I have so much trouble remembering specific details. I know trends but I can't back them up with evidence. Like the question llpitch gave us. I would have absolutely NO idea how to begin writing that essay on my own but if you gave me what to wirte about I could turn it into a kick butt essay.
My advice would be to read over each essay prompt before you begin writing. I'd say do the DBQ first. It's by far the easiest and will ease you into the writing. Then its between the comparing and the change and continuity. I'd say do the one you know most about next. It's better to write on the one you know more about than waste time trying to come up with info on the other one. Then move on to the last one. Think back. BS it if you need to. They aren't looking for perfection. There's no checklist of: they mentioned this and that but not this. Write about what you know. Connect it to other ideas. Use big words (it works! It can be the deciding factor for your grade too. If you're beween a 4 and a 5 you wrote well, you are more likely to get a 5) Don't be nervous...watch the clock but don't WATCH the clock if that makes any sense. I guess what I mean is don't look at the clock every 2 minutes but keep an eye on your time. AND TAKE THE TIME TO PLAN! Your essay will be much better that way. |
