complex ions weren't on the exam last year, and the reactions were really easy..... you also have to answer a question about them and i really just dont think they can ask you about a complex ion.....it just doesn't seem like it would be on the ap.

i need to clear up something about H2SO4..

so, the ap graders will take either:

(1) H^+ + HSO4^-

or

(2) 2H^+ + SO4^2-

correct?

ok, good.. i always choose the latter way because it's usually easier to balance.. and it makes me see other things more easily

1) what's a complex ion?
2) what does diatomic mean again?

Those aren't hydrogen, they're technically free protons. But free protons don't exist in water, so they become hydronium.

1) complex ion: central atom(s) with ligands. Generally a lewis acid/base product.

2) 2 atoms

a complexed ion is basically what happens when a transition metal and a ligand react. A ligand would be H20, NH3, etc look em up. Typically, you make twice the amount of ligand as the metals charge. Al3+ + NH3 = Al(NH3)6

Diatomic means two atoms. H2, Cl2, Br2, I2.

Yeah the halogens exist only as diatomic atoms in nature.

[Ag(NH3)2]+ is also an important complex ion. Complex ions always have a charge (duh.. ION). So Al and NH3 would be [Al(NH3)6]+3
