The freshmen required classes (e.g. PE) at my school makes it impossible to fit in an AP class. I doubt the administration would even let freshmen take AP's if it were an option.

I hear many high schools are still setting up barriers to freshmen participating in AP courses. How many of you have heard, one way or the other, officially if freshmen can sit for AP exams?

I took AP Human in 9th (rising sophomore)- surprisingly, although the general consensus around here seems to be that it's one of the easiest, my friends and I thought it was so-so even with rather extensive prep (although teacher did have to leave for personal reasons two months or so before the exam leaving us with the other not so great one).
But that's the only course that is given for freshmen I think.

The only class definitely open to all freshmen is AP US History. Granted, my school doesn't bar freshmen from taking -any- of the APs the school offers (which would be all of them); students simply must have the pre-reqs for such courses (such as the corresponding honors classes) completed first, and obviously, a majority of freshmen do not have such pre-reqs satisfied their first year of high school.

I took the ap world history tests as a freshman, ("rising" senior now). First of all, I was in an honors class, not an ap class, so we didnt do any essays in class, and we didnt cover any asian history besides mohenjo daro, and a little bit of the mongols. I was so terrified about how difficult the test would be, and I studied like, 8 hours every weekend from feburary to may, and when the test came around, I knew all but 1 multiple choice question, and I destroyed the essays (I got a 5). If you think you can take the class/test do it, AP tests really arent that hard. Also, i didnt skip grades or anything, my class was about 1150 kids, with 250 taking h world history 4 people took the tests, 4 people got fives.

My school is a very large California public (struggling under budget cuts...) & doesn't "allow" freshmen to take AP classes. My school is divided into small schools & programs so it's hard to choose AP classes, although there are quite a few compared to most public schools in the area.

When we chose our courses, a counselor helped & didn't allow us to choose AP classes. But then she allowed people from private schools transferring to the school to choose as many AP classes as they wanted to! There are many very rigorous private schools around here, & some students who transferred chose AP Chemistry.

I went mad the second semester self studying AP Biology (my regular biology class was HECTIC) & got a 5. My school didn't let me sign up for the test at first, but then I went to the AP Coordinator (an ancient lady) who thought I was a sophomore & let me sign up.

There are no freshmen in our school. The high school building is from grades 10 to 12, but there are rare cases where some kids travel from the junior high building (down the street) to take a few classes here. I've only heard of one kid doing this for core academic purposes though.

tokenadult, I think the prereqs make it difficult to register for AP courses in my S's high school, a large, suburban, comprehensive public school. This school has a number of different programs within it (American History Scholars, ROTC, Science and Technology), some with competitive entry, some not.

S is in Science and Tech (S/T), which is competitive entry and which has required courses for freshmen: Honors classes for English and History; math (class determined by results on math placement exam); Biology S/T; half a year of Engineering. This leaves 2.5 periods that are deemed electives, but as most if not all of these kids take a language, and all of the kids have to satisfy other graduation requirements (health, PE, fine arts), there is actually no room in the schedule for any AP course if a kid does what is wise and tries to fulfill some of the health/PE/FA graduation requirements early.

(S didn't get into a PE class because of scheduling issues, doesn't have room for it in his schedule next year, and how he's going to fulfill that requirement... I don't know. There's a reason why the kids are strongly encouraged to get health/PE reqs out of the way early!)
