i didn't know there were only 55 admitted, but i agree i think it will be nice because we will be really close, etc. though it is a very small amount of people. i walked around the arch department a lot while i was there and it seemed like a fairly long trudge to get anywhere. it looks close on the map, but if we know cornell there's going to be a fat hill covered with snow in between.

mike, Sandy told me that north campus is actually a blessing for us archies because it is close. if you look on the map, rand sits right by north campus. we'll be crossing over a suspension bridge every morning and night and every meal that we'll have (dunno if that's a good thing for archies haha).

but that definitely beats climbing that sucker, libe slope, everyday right from jansen's right?

hm yeah sandy also told me about the gloves situation. i'm guessing it's going to be cold but hey..let's just start a bonfire in studio. i have a north face jacket to hopefully keep me warm.

milstein hall should hopefully be warmer unless Rem Koolhaas decides to do something crazy with his crazy ideas.

guys i need help

my dad is opposing my going to Cornell because Architecture is such a hard occupation with long hard education ending up with small pay

how should i reason with him?

tell me some of the reasons that i should choose architecture!

(without the passion part-- he says i have to be reasonable here, not emotional)

well..your dad has a good point. a lot of people dont' make it because of these factors...architecture is like this in reality. of course in the long run, you do what you enjoy doing and that's what is most important. i guess just make sure that you can't do anything else BUT architecture because that's where the lure is for other drop outs...to go somewhere else where you won't have to work as much and will be paid a lot more for. the only factor that keeps people in this field is if they absolutely love it.

i think your dad worries about your financial status in the future because of the low pay, lack of satisfaction in the field but in the long run when you're old..you'll be looking back at your years and see what YOU have done in the past. for me, i think creating spaces for people is far more rewarding than simply becoming say...a financial advisor despite the fact that financial advisors earn three times more than architects.

i also plan on getting a mba after a b.arch. though architecture is my passion, I think a mba will be a nice safety net for me.

cornell will definitely give you a lot of jobs too. not necessarily higher pay but a lot more connections. if architecture is for you, you're surely aiming at the right track because cornell will you give you networks and a good education. aim for the best!

you are about 18. you will probably work till you are 60. that is about 40 years of your life that you are going to be working.

why would you condemn yourself to a life-sentence of work that you do not care for, and ultimately will not satisfy you? you should search to do something in your life where you sit down and do not feel like you're working in jail every day

anyway

1. there's always need for architects even if you don't make money you can always be a slave draftsman ("at least i'm not becoming a starving artist!")

2. "i'll pay my own way through college"-- if you really want it, then do it, and don't ask him.

Yea so I got back from Cornell (visited on Friday), it was was probably the most gorgeous school i've ever seen, and I believe it's 8 times bigger and better than Harvard!!

However, I'm basically gonna go to USC, I can't stand graduating 40k per year in debt from Cornell even tho their arch is number 1. Chances are my arch salary won't be able to pay off my undergrad debt w/ 10 years of work!... not even thinking about grad school yet! (omgplease/julie, this is my reasoning)

Well, I probably won't be w/ you guys and the other super cool arch students... I'll be majoring in business (a good usc program, since their 5 yr arch isn't even ranked) So hit me up in the future if u need business connections and draft me a mansion (if i shall be financially lucky)!

Basically this is my farewell Mike, Justin, & Julie, unless something miraculous happens...

yup i agree with blackferrari, Jenny u have made a mature and i guess a smart decision ^-^ Lucky you.

my dad came up with three choices for me: (ranked from 1~3)
1. go to Cornell and transfer to CAS after freshman year--> aim for Law school later on
2. go to Chicago and major in econ--> aim for law school
3. go to Virginia (cheap and prestigious)

.... does he really think i will be transferring to CAS after starting on architecture? haha
well.. what do you guys think is the wisest decision?

(i know this is becoming an issue nothing to do with arch, but you know the short history of it,, so i would really like your advice ^-^)
