Puerto Penasco and Phoenix location

So I was looking around the Phoenix area, and notice Puerto Penasco... and seem to have great beaches. How popular is Puerto Penasco for the students/ area? Looking more at Phoenix it does seem to be close to being in a absolute location, though: San Diego, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas... all cities that seem to be distinct are a few hours away. Though not a far drive from ocean, mountains, deserts etc.... Oh yeah, is Phoenix location taken advantage of by the residents, or do most residents stay within metro like most residents would in any other metro?

Very popular, and very fun, though some people say taking the extra hour drive to San Diego/ La Jolla is worth it. People usually go there for spring breaks, or summer. but to put it in perspective Las Vegas (from my house) is about 4 hours, Los Angeles 6 hours, San Diego 4-5 Hours, and Puerto Penasco is about 3 hours or 4 depending on border traffic.
