MICA Questions

Hi i was wondering if anyone here is/knows a animation major with a concentration in film at MICA? their website in my opinion doesn't seem updated because it doesn't show very impressive material in that field, but i know they are a well respected school. I have already been accepted to OTIS, CCAD, SCAD and MICA, and am still waiting on RISD. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some in site on what that major is like down at mica and maybe a bit about what i life is like in general.

I also am concerned about mica's respectability, i know they are well known and have a great reputation but there is this girl in my art class who also go accepted there, and well, not to brag or anything, but her work was just terrible, in fact when the mica lady came to look at her portfolio, she basically said nothing good about it, yet i am still wondering how on earth she was accepted? her grades aren't that good either, and my honest opinion of her is that she tries way too hard to look and act different. it just doesn't seem right, and i was really expecting her to get denied. Now i do not hate the girl but i don't love her, maybe that could be a reason. but what ever....

anyone here go to mica?

You can make yourself go crazy trying to figure out why someones gets accepted or rejected. There may be something in the girl's application that you do not know about.

I suggest you visit or revisit MICA. Hopefully, you can get some answers to your questions.

Good Luck!

Mica became my d's first choice on the campus tour. You really need to visit and see for yourself. She plans to visit again next week to learn more about her specific interests. I called the school and learned that Ama is the rep for our state. Alma also came to give a presentation at her high school. I agree the website needs more information and posted artwork.

^ I emailed the admissions adviser yesterday and she said they will mail the scholarships and financial aid packages April 9-11th.

reread post number 2. It is quite correct. You will go crazy trying to figure out why some folks get accepted or rejected. There are a myriad of factors such as: maybe the admissions rep liked some of the drawings, maybe her parents had a special connections, maybe they wanted a under represented minority, maybe she had some athletic or other ECs that they wanted etc.

My daughter got admitted to Carnegie Mellon after previously being waitlisted. We saw the work posted by many of the students and posted in the studios. Without question, our daughter could have done better work than at least 80% of the work that we saw, yet my daughter got waitlisted.

Every year, you see kids whose stats place them well above the median for accepted kids at a school yet they get rejected.

Bottom line: stop trying to worry about the acceptance or rejection or other kids. It will drive you crazy and make you make bad decisions.

Scholarship Finalists for MICA - does anyone know how many finalists there are and how many scholarships are awarded? Is the size of the freshman class around 500?

Scholarships are sent out Apr. 9-11 so no one knows how much they got yet. Last year's freshman class was around 400 I believe; I don't know if its bigger this year.

Different scholarships award different numbers of people (I'm talking bout the individual ones they sent out forms for) Again I don't know how many people are awarded the regular merit scholarships. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but you can always just contact one of their admissions advisers. They're really nice

My son and I attended the MICA scholarship finalists open house today. I can tell you there was a huge crowd; definitely hundreds of kids attended, so I couldn't even guess how many kids applied(thousands?)

I thought MICA said they were almost done with the selections and they would mail out aid packages this week and everyone should know where they stand by this weekend.

sketchy - the open house that we had today was for scholarship finalists, general admitted students, and prospective juniors and sophomores, so there were more people there than just admitted students.

The freshman class generally floats around 400. They try not to go above 450.

Thanks, patois. I knew the open house was for everyone, but I thought MICA gave a separate program for scholarship finalists. I think the presentation they gave was just for scholarship finalists, and the auditorium was almost full.

While I was looking at all the people, it made me wonder how many people does MICA accept knowing that kids apply to so many colleges these days, and what happens to the scholarship money given to students that choose to go somewhere else?

I think usually the money that is not used (those that choose to go to another school) goes back in the scholarship fund. I'm curious how many kids actually get scholarship money and how many kids are given the scholarship finalist status.

What does scholarship finalist mean? Is it a special scholarship? Is it different from the ones they sent out applications for?

That's a good question - I now suspect, after reading these posts, everyone who completed the form for scholarship with their application is a scholarship finalist.

Think some folks are flagged for this during portfolio reviews. When my D applied, she was told she was a scholarship finalist before she officially appplied for any scholarships.

Best of luck to all. MICA does like to spread the scholarship money around vs. giving lots of merit aid to just a few students.
