Living in NYC during internship?

So I was recently offered the chance at a prestigious internship with a boutique in NYC, and I would love to be able to do it.

However, the internship is non-paying, and I'd need to find affordable housing. I'm probably going to try again next summer since I have plenty of time (rising college freshman), but if anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I would definitely check out the International Youth Hostel. It's on the west side and has a very good reputation for cleanliness, etc. I'm sorry I don't have a link for you - google?

Your least expensive option would be to sublet from a NYC student who is leaving the City for the summer. It can be easily done through Craigslist. You can also try posting on livejournal for the various schools. Can't personally help you has more daughter informed us yesterday she plans to stay in the City for the summer.

If we aren't living in the shoebox and I had teenage girl instead of the boy, I would love to have you with us.
However, 92 st. Y has monthly rate for internship students.
Check on the web. I don't know where your job will be but if it is on Upper East Side, you can walk from there. We live in the area and it just so great to be near museums and park even though our building is dingy.

bears and dogs,

I grew up in that area in a building that sounds like yours. It was the best place ever to be a kid. I feel sorry for my kids sometimes in the suburbs - like they're being cheated, so I'm jealous of you guys! Enjoy every minute

like I said, if I had a girl or you got boy, you can come and camp with us!
We had family friend from south last summer-- mom plus three boys; 19, 16, and 8 year old (plus my own 15 ) stayed in 1 BR apartment that I suspect converted from studio because parquet floor pattern connects room to room.
It is sort of pre war rent stab air pocket place for now. but hi-rise is sprouting left to right so I don't know how long we can stay lucky...I am praying two more years please until he'd be off to who knows where.

i think cornell has good website of student nyc housing resources...
NYU is all closed up for the summer but you might be able to find something at Columbia.

Also, look on craigslist for rooms to rent. Check out facebook as well (join New York, ny network).

As far as I know, NYU is not closed up for the summer. (I go here.) I would call the office and ask. People cancel. I stayed at Broome St. last summer and it was lovely... Housing is typically less expensive for students who are enrolled in summer classes at NYU, but it's still fairly reasonable. If you do decide to look into NYU summer housing, GET AIR CONDITIONING! Rubin may seem like a great, reasonably priced option, but it is hot and uncomfortable. The heat in New York during the summer is humid and sticky.

sfkef....I have a daughter at NYU and while NYU Summer Housing is normally open to those who do not attend NYU or any NYU summer programs, this year that is not the case and it is not open to those outside of NYU.

I also have a daughter (not the NYU one but my arch one) who is doing an internship at an architecture firm in Manhattan this summer but hers is for pay. I wish my girls could live together in the city this summer as my NYU kid has a job in her field this summer too but she was given free housing in NYU dorms for the summer which is too good to pass up (even though she no longer lives on campus) and so the plan is that she is going to rent a new apartment for next school year with another girl but start on June 1 but not live in it herself this summer and my arch daughter is going to rent it from her for the summer. They still have to get the apartment though.
