| My D went through this decision process and took about a year deciding! She actually went into college thinking BFA in painting and BA in English. We found that the schools that offered BFA had better facilities, more faculty and a wider variety of courses offered. When doing her schedule for the fall pf her soph yr. she met with her art prof/advisor and discussed these options. First, to get the BFA is very time intensive, I think a difference of 30 credits in studio. She would also like to study abroad and it would have been impossible to do all that in 4 years. Her mentor thought it would take almost 6! So instead, she has decided to go for a BS in art, and a BA in English, followed by an MFA in art which could be done in 6 years as well. Her prof. told her that the MFA programs don't really value the BFA over the BS or BA in acceptance, they are most interested in portfolio. She feels the BS offers the middle ground, with more intensive studio than BA but not as much as BFA. The down side is she won't have her own studio and she won't have her own senior art show, both for BFA only.
Hope that helps! |
