Think very carefully. Do you really want to bypass the "National Merit Scholar " designation. It is determined by the SAT participants in their Junior year. It is a feather in the cap for any high performing student.
It's actually determined by PSAT performance Junior year. It does require a confirming SAT score -- hopefully the good sophomore level score would be within the right timeframe to avoid having to take it again.
