If you are currently in high school, it is against NCAA regulations to attend a "try out" with a college team. Here is how colleges hold try outs: they hold elite, invitation-only camps that top recruits are able to attend (at the athlete's expense) or, in some restricted situations, an athlete is able to join the college team in an "open gym/players only" type of situation (on a visit to the school, out of season) where the coaches are (supposedly) not present. I have seen a couple of college coaches walking very slowly past the area where the recruit is participating and the players on the team are certainly invited to give their input regarding the recruit afterwards. Basically, most coaches try to follow most NCAA regulations. Every coach breaks the rules. It is up to the recruit to protect his/her eligibility. Get a copy of the NCAA booklet for high school athletes or call the NCAA hotline if you have any questions. Once a recruit graduated from high school, they can attend try outs for whomever they like.

But I can say that Division III colleges are not allowed to have recruits participate in anything that resembles a tryout while visiting a college. They can certainly have tryouts at the beginning of the season.
