I've browsed through this forum a little bit but haven't really seen the answer to my question...

I was just wondering who necessarily gets a likely letter? Are athletes only to get one if they are being heavily recruited by other competing schools? Or only if the AO does not think that they would be able to get in regular/early decision?

I am curious to see under what circumstances a likely letter is given vs a coach's support in the regular/early admissions pool.

Recruited athletes who want to be officially committed to an Ivy early receive likely letters. Being qualified for RD/ED has nothing to do with it; the student has to be able to get in RD/ED anyways to get a LL. LL recipients aren't necessarily heavily recruited as in they don't have to be top athletes; if a coach wants them, they could be a player of any caliber fit to belong on the team.

Out of curiosity, how is your situation working out? I recall reading your profile on another board section; hope all is well and you are getting close to receiving a LL from a school.

Thanks for the clarification! I felt like I was getting mixed messages when I asked around my school.

The process is looking optimistic, at least on my end. I've kept in contact with the coaches for the Ivy League schools I'm looking at. One let me know that I should find out about a LL around Thanksgiving...so I'm in that very anxious waiting period right now! The other coach was only allowed to give out ~1 LL (its not a really high profile men's sport) but said he would back me in regular admissions. So I'm hoping all is well!
