So hows this gonna go down?

Im being supported with admissions at an elite nescac school (football) as well as MIT. the problem lies in the fact that the nescac school has told me that they can give me word from admissions possible this week, while i cannot hear officially from MIT untill march. if i am notified that i am accepted into the nescac school, will i be presented with an ultimatum, "you have a week to tell us or its gone" type thing? it is probably important to mention that my grades are good enough that i did not need to have a slot spent on me. i would like to wait to hear from MIT also as i am interested in science, yet im very anxious as to whether or not i will be forced to take an early offer. Thank you very much

If you get the nescac acceptance, and they ask for a commitment, let them know you will be waiting until March for your other acceptance. If the nesccac school has not given you a likely letter, or asked for a verbal commitment, you should be fine. Good luck!

A verbal is not legally binding, only signed letters. Unfortunately colleges have been known to break their verbal commitments to athletes, as well as athletes breaking their's.

Stalling until March is your best bet. Just let them know you must consider all offers in order to pursue your academic goals. Do you have another safety/acceptance in case your Nesac pulls their offer?

Are you being supported at both schools?

Did you tell each coach you would go there if you got in?

Does MIT give some type of likely letter earlier than 3.14....?

MIT does not give anything untill the march acceptance. i will have a safety because my scores are pretty good but if i cannot get into MIT i would really like to go to the nescac, and im not even decided yet that MIT is my first choice. i want to have the opportunity to visit before i make any decisions. Im trying to find how they do things in the nescac, because i was told the ivys can give offers with very short deadlines. (i am being supported at both schools, and sortof told the nescac school id go if i got in) MIT seemed to be out of the picture at the time

Verbal commit while your waiting, that's what I would do.

"i am being supported at both schools, and sortof told the nescac school id go if i got in."

If you "sort of told" the nescac coach you would go, you should keep your word. Period.

Wait to hear from the NESCAC school. They are merely looking at your academics and are giving you a once over to let you know your chances of admissions. You do not have to pull your applications to other schools nor are you "committed" to attend. NESCAC schools MIGHT send you a early letter of acceptance in March, but they cannot give you an absolute answer from anyone but admissions. Based on experience you'd be crazy not to make your decisions after acceptances are in hand. Telling someone it is your intention to accept admissions if it is offered to you is not the same as dumping all of your eggs and HOPING. Again, wait to hear back from the school before you do anything else. And do not make any irreversible decisions until you have something firm to work with.

i dont think what i said was irreversible, i said that if i am accepted i'l probably go. things changed since then, my parents want me to visit MIT, thats reasonable I think. when i told them that i assumed that they would be making me some type of offer, i had very little knowledge of the process, i dont really have anyone to talk to that has nescac experience.

this is only going to be a problem if i actually get into MIT, thats no easy feat.

this is how its gonna go down: ive been deffered to commitee at amherst unfortunately, despite being supported for football and having a 1490. im very dissapointed and now have to wait for an answer in march will very well may be a no. plus side, i will definetly hear from MIT as well, which is pretty much the only silver lining i can find, other than that i wasnt rejected outright

plan C is not going to involve football sadly, my applications to cornell, welseyan and some safety schools should hopefully come through. recruiting is a lot tougher than i ever imagined

My son is going through the same thing. Hopefully you kept your options open. What is supposed to be will be and you just have to be patient. It's not that far away.

My S just received an EDII acceptance from a NESCAC school for football but boy was it stressful. He went EDI at another top NESCAC after being fully supported by the coach but admissions deferred him to RD, wanting to see mid year grades. His midyear grades were great but still admissions would not budge and then he had to make a choice. As you were, he was told applications are up ridiculously this year.
S visited the other NESCAC, loved the coach, campus and overnight experience and after long deliberations decided to switch his regular decision to EDII rather than wait out RD at both schools.
The second coach initially said if he he did not go EDII it might indicate to him that my S was not as serious about attending, but later told my S not to rush his decision and only go EDII if he really could see himself at that school. So I'm sure that was a bit of strategy on the coaches part.
However, my S became a bit discouraged with the first school and did not want to go all the way to March only to be denied admission or waitlisted.
I would think with your grades and scores you would be a shoe in. I guess the questions is did Amherst already meet most of it's football admission quota through EDI?
Best of luck to you! It's a long process for you kids!
