Ball State University

My name is Bill jenkins and I am the Department Chair of Theatre and Dance at ball State University. I am a recent member to this "Discussion Board" and I am happy to offer insight about the Musical Theatre Program at ball State, as well as any questions folks may have as they apply to Theatre programs across the country.

Ball State's Music Theatre program is very rigorous. We accept 18 students per year which accounts for approximately 12-15% of those who audition. We currently have a BA/BS program but will be implementing a new BFA in the fall of 2008. We currently offer Showcases in LA, NY, and Chicago. For more info, please visit <www.bsu.edu/theatre>. I am glad to be a part of this great site!

Note from a Sophomore

I'm a Sophomore Musical Theatre Major from Ball State University and I am here to tell you how AMAZING this school is!! We have grown so much over the years and we continue to get better and better! We have very talented students here who truly love the art of theatre and have true drive and passion. Everyone is so supportive of everyone else! We are like a family here and I love my family. The main reason why Ball State is so great is it's faculty and staff. You will never, EVER find a more caring and supportive staff and faculty anywhere else!! These people truly care about your success in your field and will do anything to help you accomplish that success! They know us all by name and are always there to provide guidance! I have never made a better decision than the one to attend Ball State University doing what I love! Come visit! Come see a show! You won't be dissappointed!!

Ball State Bill,

Welcome! I am very pleased to see that another MT program administrator has joined our ranks. I have enjoyed reading posts from Otterbein's Doctorjohn and Florida State's All4FSU. It's great for readers to be able to get information "straight from the horse's mouth".

One of my D's friends from H.S., Betsy H. has been attending your school as a theatre major and says she's very happy.

Thanks for the welcome

I am thrilled to be on the website. I have been excited to read the questions and conversations. Betsy H. is a terrific young woman who is doing really wonderfully in the program. We are very excited to have her and will miss her when she graduates next year.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Can anyone offer any information on the Scenic Design program or the Theatrical Studies option? How hard it is to get into these programs and what does Ball State offer that others do not?

The Scene Design program has an audition/portfolio presentation at the end of the sophomore year. The Theatre Studies Option has no audition and requires a minimum 3.0 gpa to remain in the program after the Freshman Year.
