Bard Chances

I'm really interested in Bard! It seems like a great, challenging school.

I plan on raising my ACT score: I took the test the first time not knowing ANYTHING about its format (I earned a composite score of 30), but now I have a book that I'm using to study. I took the SATs twice, but I found that my scores were average (600 to 690 for each component) and I was better-suited towards the ACT. I would really prefer to NOT take the SATs again.

Do you think that my NOT playing a varsity/junior varsity sport in high school will effect my admissions chances? I have been an active dancer for almost 15 years.

Thank you for all of those that respond, and best wishes to all of you!

Hi PinkSummer.

First, regarding your test scores...Bard is really not interested in them. You can submit them, but they don't carry much weight. So if your grades, EC's and letters are good, I wouldn't stress about this too much. Regarding athletics, Bard is probably one of the least sporty of the top LAC's. (Our tour guide last year joked about how uncompetitive they were.) So 15 years of dance would almost certainly trump playing a sport.

Consider doing the IDP (immediate decision program) discussed on the other Bard thread. My D found out she was accepted around Thanksgiving. She ultimately chose a different school (Drew), but she really liked what Bard had to offer. Be aware though, it is in the middle of nowhere. If you really want to be in or near a city, look elsewhere. On the plus side, I understand this type of environment really forces students to build community. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I recently attended a college fair and I *attempted* to speak to the Bard representative, but the woman behind the table made it clear that she couldn't be bothered to answer my questions. Bummer :[

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about test scores. If you feel confident about them, then I would send them in. But a 30 on the ACT is really good! I got a 27 and I was accepted early action, so I'd say send in the ACT scores.

And you have a really good chance (I was looking at your profile); is Bard high on your list of colleges? It was on mine, and I made that clear in my application. I was really surprised to get in because I had very few ECs and average grades and test scores, so I think that, by making it clear that Bard was my dream school in the application, it was a major factor in their decision. Good luck!
