Art Supplements

Hi! I was wondering if anyone out there was submitting an arts supplement to Barnard--either under the Common App arts supplement guidelines or, of more interest to me personally, an independent creative writing sample?

Just curious to see what talents my competition has. ;-)

D wants to submit a music supplement but she doesn't see any form to fill out with the supplement. Does anyone know if one exists?

Is it weird it this question offends me?

I always thought a Barnard woman attitude would be more along the lines of "I wonder what cool talents my future classmates have!"
After all, peer group is a large part of the college experience and one of the biggest reasons I chose to apply to Barnard. I'd hope that my "competition" is as talented and deserving as possible.

On that note, another thing I liked about Barnard was that its admissions process did not feel like a competition. It is more of a thorough evaluation of whether or not you fit in the school.

Ok, end rant. To answer your question, I am submitting no formal arts supplement. Some of my essay are very poetic, but I think the strongest part of my app is the required Barnard supplement.

Sorry if I sounded like a b****. I meant that it the best way possible. I like intellectual discussions and debates, ha. Good luck to you, wej and jcbaby, and to your daughter, NJ Mom. Maybe I'll see you girls next year

Chocolat3 - I'm not sure why you would be offended. Much of my D's life revolves around her music. It only seems right that if she is being evaluated on who she is, which is what I think this whole process is about, then her music must be heard since that is a large part of who she is. It is not a competition, but a part of the whole picture.

Good luck to you all!

NJ Mom- Perhaps you misinterpreted my post. I didn't mean the question, I meant the comment: "Just curious to see what talents my competition has."

Like I said, I consider a Barnard attitude to be more "I wonder what cool talents my future classmates have!" and the better/ more talented the applicants are, the happier that makes me.
It looks like we agree about it not being a competition and that special talents make Barnard a special place.

I hoped that the wink would soften the edges on that comment because I didn't mean it to come off as . . . well, offensive. I agree with you COMPLETELY, ch0c0lat3, that (my hopefully future) peers should have all of the best characteristics possible, and that the evaluation process should determine whether or not one fits into the school. That focus on "the Barnard woman" is what I love most about the school as well.

At the same time, I don't think one can deny that the admissions process is competitive, and therefore, in a way, a competition. I was, however, being playful in my comment as I wanted to hear more about the backgrounds of those applying.

Are you applying ED?

Sorry to have caused any bad feelings.

And, yes, good luck to all! :-)
