Greetings from Bates!

I write to invite you to an exciting opportunity to experience Bates' rigorous intellectual life-the Annual Mount David Undergraduate Research Summit on Friday March 30, 2012. The Faculty Committee on Admission and Financial Aid invites you and your family to join us for lunch from 12:00-1:30PM in the Benjamin Mays Center. The Summit begins at 1:30PM and includes concurrent student presentations in Pettengill Hall and a number of arts events beginning at 7:30PM. As faculty, we believe that each '''' Bates student '''' will develop into a scholar in his or her own right, and will be ready to articulate and defend his or her ideas in a public forum. """My colleagues and I, look forward to meeting you and your family as you join Bates College for this day of celebration."""


Many students who present their work at the Mount David Summit are senior thesis writers, approaching the summit of their academic career at Bates. Their presentation-which might be a research poster or a short, 15-minute talk-represents hundreds of hours of work, remarkable dedication to their studies, and a synthesis of all that they have learned at Bates. Other presenters are at different points in this journey; they may be in the process of developing the skills and insights that will serve their thesis work in the future. The artists who participate in the summit-the poets, fiction writers, dancers, musicians, and photographers-bring to their work a combination of technique, cultural and intellectual context, ways of thinking and seeing the world, and raw talent that is nurtured in a liberal arts environment.

I received this email as well. Also - and maybe this has happened to someone else - someone from Bates tried to call my home phone and I wasn't around. My dad passed on my cell number, but I haven't heard anything yet. Who knows what they were calling about...
I noticed this text at the top of the email: "You are receiving this email from Bates College Office of Admission Website because you purchased a product/service or subscribed on our website. To ensure that you continue to receive emails from us, add admission@bates.edu to your address book today. If you haven't done so already, click to confirm your interest in receiving email campaigns from us."
I have a feeling that we're getting this because applying to Bates puts us on some email list. At the same time, it seems strange that they would invite every applicant to "an exciting opportunity to experience Bates' rigorous intellectual life."
Has anyone who applied NOT received this?

Don't know if this means anything in terms of admissions but the invitation is sent to alums as well. My guess is that it's simply another point of contact. It's an opportunity to give current students a wider audience and showcase the work being done at the school while at the same time giving applicants, alums, parents and the community another excuse to visit campus and to maintain excitement about Bates's academic environment. If you're interested in Bates and you live nearby it's a nice way to see the level of research being done by current Batesies.

My son is a freshman and he never received the invitation to Mt. David last year so it's not just something the school sends out simply because you applied.

There was a discussion of this invitation in the decision thread from last year.

I live on the West Coast, but my parents live in New England. I applied to Bates last year, and was rejected (now I'm re-applying during a gap year). I don't recall getting an email like this last time. My fingers are crossed, but I'm still skeptical - I won't get my hopes up until I have the official word from admissions!

@Mehta93 - If I am not wrong, you are an Indian :P Dude, you killed my chances at Bates. We have almost same stats and similar extra-curricular. And this email proves that you are in! hahaha CONGRATULATIONS Do keep me updated :P

I hope not.. What if they sent it to a particular pool of applicants (ex: involved in research - like me?)
Don't take it as a rejection for yourself... Im sure you will get in too

@mehta93 - Research is what worrying me the most. My application is research oriented and talks about my research I am sure the admission officer would have a tough time while evaluating both of us :P But I am really HAPPY for you Just keep praying for me

Just wondering why you are so sure that the email invite means something positive? I guess we'll never know if someone got the email but didn't get in.

my app had absolutely nothing to do with science or research... totally the opposite haha. i'm totally "right-brained." I'll let you all know if i'm not accepted. no shame.
and for anyone panicking because they didn't see this email... don't. i shouldn't talk, because i'm stressed over not getting a likely letter from any school i applied to, but it's really pointless to let little things like this serve as an indication of the school's ultimate decision. the list of kids who were invited to mt. david was probably somewhat randomized (but i won't pretend to know how or why they sent it out).
Good luck to all, and keep the faith. You never know what size envelope you'll find in your mailbox!

Ahhh, but the waiting is sooooo hard. It's nice to have a shred of hope to hang onto after my D got waitlisted at Wesleyan.

I hate that the send the letters out on Fridays so that we have to wait the whole weekend and I also hate that the portals open later in the day, except for Middlebury's, that I know of. The waiting is the worst. At least for me.
