Bates is in the middle of Lewiston, a fairly run-down town. There is stuff to do in town (restaurants, bars, etc) but Lewiston is definitely not a happening city. Bates is about 1/2 an hour away from Freeport (a lot of outlets/good shopping) and 45 minutes outside of Portland, which is a really great city with lots to do.

pretty far. Maine in general is isolated. Freeport is very touristy with lots of WASP-y attractions. Portland is larger and has much more to do, but is still quite small and limited. Boston is the nearest "real city" but that's about 3 hours.
