Beloit Theatre Majors?

While my son plans to apply to BFA acting programs, we are encouraging him to apply to LACs with strong Theatre programs. Anybody out there familiar with Beloit's program? Beloit was recommended.

Brian, You may want to go to Livejournal.com and do an INTEREST search for "Beloit College." That will lead you to the Beloit College Live Journal, where you will find current students who are happy to answer questions. They'll probably be most helpful if your son is the one doing the asking, but I believe you can also search the archives and see if similar questions have been asked. Beloit students, are, in general, very willing to help prospies.

Brian: My son is a first year drama major at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. Beloit was his second choice, although it was the first college he fell in love with.

His thinking was as follows: "if I really want to be an actor I should go to a school where I will compete with other serious actors. This is a tough business so I better see where I fit in it". His start at Sarah Lawrence was tough. At his first open audition for faculty-directed plays he did not get a call back for anything. (a first for him) He admitted he was intimidated by the tryouts (another first) in part because so many of the students trying out had extensive and impressive resumes in and around Broadway, on TV, etc. Also, he was one of the few kids without head shots. He'd never had them taken or needed them before. It was a rough first week of school and one that he did not think he would have experienced at Beloit. He felt that the Beloit Theatre programming was probably more nurturing than the one he chose.

However, he joined a student cabaret troupe, auditioned for and got a part in a dance program, participated in a couple of faculty directed readings, got two call backs at second semester open tryouts and ultimately received a good part in a faculty-directed play set to go on in April.

Right now, my son knows he wants to give theatre a major shot. He has rejected my entreaties to get a well-rounded liberal arts education and is pretty drama-centric. How serious is your son about taking his shot at this?
