I'm just starting a thread, you should add responses

I think it is rather sad that no one ever posts anything here, so I will post this and check it whenever I log on. Maybe we can eventually revitalize this college's board.

So who is going to Beloit this year?

That is cool. I'm in the TRiO program, so I get to move in on the 9th. Half the reason I am doing the damn program is because I get to move in earlier and get out of the house that much faster.

Have you moved out here yet, or are you staying there until the 14th?

i think there might be intro to astronomy. i recall seeing it on last year's schedule but this year's may be different.

i don't know my room assignment yet, hopefully i'll get it soon. i really want to be in aldrich! have you gotten yours? you move in earlier, so shouldn't they send it earlier? which did you put as a first choice?

that's a bit strange. well, if it's not available this semester, maybe it will be next. i am really lax in checking course catalogs. and that's kind of a pain in the @ss to have to move in twice. but the TRiO program is a really awesome oppurtunity anyways, i'm sure it'll be really cool.

I went to new york at the beginning of the summer, but other than that, i have just been sitting around. i feel like i should do something, but instead i just wait around, counting the days till i get to leave. i'm really glad summer's gonna be over, too, because it's been a pretty boring one for me.

What's the story regarding financial problems (the economy) at Beloit? Any links that anyone can recommend?

Son and I visited in April, about 6 mos. after 10% layoff. We did not get the sense that there was any out of the ordinary financial problems. We asked and were told that the layoff actually brought Beloit staffing in line with comparable colleges. Stuents said little to no impact on class size or availability or other programs that affect them directly. It may be that Beloit was a bit more proactive and up front about what it was doing. I know that schools in my area (New England) are cutting, they just don't talk about it. I don't think Beloit is any worse of than a lot of similar LACs.

I agree—I think Beloit was one of the first schools to move on a problem that eventually affected most colleges. Beloit appears to have things under control, financially speaking. My daughter is a sophomore there, and as far as the students are concerned, all is well.

The students have suffered very little, if at all, from the recession.

My financial aid package, as well as all the student I have spoken with, from Beloit was far, far better than any other school offered.

The new science building is still on track to be completed by the time classes come around.

If anything the recession is working for Beloit students. After the Beloit Mall closed down, the city bought the property, relocated the public library to the former mall's JC Penny, and sold the old public library to a Beloit alumnus who is giving it to the college to use as a experimental learning facility.
