Social Life and Dating Life

what's the average social life like at beloit?

i've visited and realized that the town is certainly lacking so i guess that most students stay on campus during the weekends. but what kind of social life happens on campus??

and how active is the greek life? i cant see beloit as a very 'greek'-esq school but i know that they do have sororities and frats.

and what's the dating life like? do people date or mostly just hookup??

thanks (=

My daughter is a sophomore at Beloit and loves it. The students do stay on campus on the weekends and there is always plenty to do: movies, concerts, dances, poetry slams, parties—you name it. Greek life is not prominent—it’s a very small percentage of the student body. Beloit students can party hard, but you don’t have to be a drinker to fit in. As for the dating life, I’m a mom, so I can only hope that couples date rather than just hookup.

I am a current freshman and I agree with everything Mary13 says.

I was concerned about Greek Life before coming to Beloit (Im not a fan), but coming here it isn't a problem at all. There are 3 frats and 2 sororities (i think), and they are nothing like the Greek systems at big Universities. They remind me more of special interest houses. There is no exclusivity and they come no where near dominating the social scene.

Drinking is a common activity for many Beloit students on the weekends, but there are always substance free activities and a strong an active sub free population. The drinking that takes place on campus is not the same as the drinking you would find at state universities. Beloit works hard to make students feel safe and comfortable. Also there is almost no pressure at all to drink or not to drink.

Beloit as a town is pretty lacking, but campus always has plenty to do (never a dull moment) and Chicago and Madison are close by.

There is a mix of dating and hookups. It really depends on what you're looking for.

I'm a recent graduate of Beloit and a member of one of the sororities. Yes, Beloit has 3 national fraternities, 2 national sororities, and 1 local sorority. The Greek orgs are inclusive and membership is pretty diverse: they attract students from all sides of campus. The administration also prohibits hazing and drinking at parties...although the latter isn't enforced in the fraternities. There's a big emphasis on leadership opportunities and community service within the Greek orgs though the experience is what you make it.

I feel like the city of Beloit is the same way. It's easy to discount the place because on the surface there isn't much to do. But there are some decent restaurants, a movie theater, parks and bike/running trails, and a fancy new library. Also, many of my friends got involved in local politics doing internships with state reps and campaiging for issues like sex ed reform in the public schools. Some professors assign projects where you need to get involved with the city: interviewing a community rep, investigating a problem, etc. While I didn't love Beloit (the city) I appreciated the opportunities I had to get involved there.

I had the time of my life at Beloit so enjoy it now, Smallcolleges!
