double major with ME and EECS at berkeley?

1. IM NOT SUICIDAL!
Now, with that in mind... let me continue ^^;

I just got accepted to UC Berkeley ME as an international, but I'm also interested in EECS... Thing is, I don't wanna give up either... Is it physically possible to manage a double major like that? Or should I seek psychiatric help? lolol

I think (and I'm not at all sure about this, I would talk to a counselor) EECS is the more strict major, in terms of having to take very major-specific courses right away your first semester to stay on track. So I would say take the minimum required courses to stay on track for EECS (keeping in mind that you can make up a couple of classes over the summer if you need to), and try to fit in as many ME courses as you can and still survive the workload. As for doubling those two up, I couldn't even comment....I'm a freshman too. I know enough to say for sure that if it's even possible, it will be quite difficult, but that's all I can really say.

Anyways, where are you from?

Double majors are not worth it unless you're working a job that actually requires extensive knowledge of both of the subjects. I think you should major in one thing and take interesting-looking classes from the other engineering field.

Actually funny you should ask, because I'm also very undecided about what to major in. I'm currently Engineering - Undeclared, and I'm hoping something will draw my interest particularly, because it all seems interesting right now. I'm interested in EECS, MSE, MechE, etc. I'm hoping that taking some major-specific classes can help guide me.

And I'm from Santa Cruz, CA.

i'm a double major of ME and EECS at berkeley right now. i can say that it wont be easy and you definitely wont have the approval of the counselor since they highly advise you from not doing it. it's challenging but it earns you instant respect as well if you survive it since you'll be in rare company of surviving the two top majors of berkeley's engineering program. i would advise against it if it takes you 5 years though since thats a ****load of extra money to pay for out of state (i am out of state as well). but if you can finish in 4 years like i'm on track to do then you will be getting 2 degrees for the price of one

I have 3 friends who are doing it (one of them just graduated). They're all VERY intelligent and hard working, but they said the work was worth it.

Beware, it will be TOUGH.

To the OP:

It's not worth it. It would be more efficient if you took the time and energy you would have spent on the double and instead used it to get a master's degree, maybe by staying at Berkeley or maybe at some other school.
