Dear svg1990 : Your SAT scores are in the second quartile - about the 35th percentile of accepted students from last year. Your GPA seems weaker than many who post here, but given that BC representatives visited your High School, they would know best how to position that GPA versus the curriculum. You have not called out your AP/IB experience so it is tough to see as an outsider how rigorous your studies might have been.

Music and sports are all present and appear to be consistent forces in your academic life. Is there anything else that you have on the sports side in addition to Hockey? BC's "Beanpot Tournament" was this last week - as a Hockey fan, you might have been very interested in the competition.

If you can fill in some of the missing details (clubs, volunteerism) and the points above, we can do a better "thumbs-up, thumbs-down" rating. Right now, your profile looks promising, but incomplete.

Well my school doesn't offer a lot of APs, mainly because they don't want us to have to take the exams if we don't want to. However, our admissions counselor tells the universities that most of our upper level classes are AP-Level. Basically, that means that for courses that have an AP exam, we'd be able to succeed on them. However, I have taken a few, but once again, our curriculum is extremely rigorous. We don't really have honors classes. I'm not sure why we do this, but it seems to be working. Our school was in the top 10 or 15 best private schools in the country

In terms of other extra currics, I am an assistant coach for a younger students hockey team, (paid), and I have been on 2 Church community service trips over the summer to Honduras. I've also volunteered at various soup kitchens, etc.

Hope that helps a little more?

Oh and for the 35th percentile thing, I assume that includes writing. I didn't know BC counted writing...Weird.

i think its a 50/50, there are a lot of people in the same type of position as u

with rigorous courseloads, most BC kids get 3.8

Dear svg1990 : BC's acceptance midpoint is approximately 1350 on the two way SAT. Your two way SAT score of 1380 places you in about the 35th percentile without the writing component. You would likely be slightly lower if the writing was added. In short, your CR score might well hurt you in the application process.

As for your follow-up, you stated "...that means that for courses that have an AP exam, we'd be able to succeed on them." While your school would like you to have a "pass" on that description, that is explanation is at best weak. What does this say to every AP Scholar who has taken ten and more AP exams and scored 4s and 5s? Take the course, take the test and compete. Personally, I do not care how rigorous a High School claims to be since that only trades on reputation. At the High School level, AP/IB courses are truly the measure of many top students and institutions.

This evaluation has you at less than 50/50 of getting an offer. That said, if this is truly one of your hopeful schools, we wish you the best at acceptance.

if a 1350 is the middle, how exactly does a 1380 make the 35th percentile? is this because the scores are slightly skew left due to people with 1500+ ?

Dear svg1990 : The 25th percentile is 1420 and the function is not precisely linear. Knowing the shape of the curve, you are approximately the 35th percentile. (For those reading, the 75th percentile was 1240 last year and the expectation was that the curve would shift upwards 20 points or so this year.)

OHHH you're doing it differently. what you're calling the 35th percentile is what I would call the 65th percentile...yeah.

Dear svg1990 : Apologies for the confusion - I was talking about the top x% as opposed to the bottom-up performance used to describe SAT performance. Actually, I should have used data presented in the SAT style given we were talking about SAT scores! None the less, good luck with your application, svg!
