I am transferring from NJIT after freshman year (32 credits).

I would like to know my chances of getting into Boston College.

HS GPA: 2.8
College GPA: 4.0 (Will be a 3.8 once 2nd sem is included)
SATS: 1370/1600, 2010/2400

EC:
- I own my own small business with 2 employees
- 1st place, New Jersey web design competition, 2007
- Xerox award for innovation in technology, 2007
- Technology department top student award form my high school
- Volunteer work, church work.

Essay isn't great, I just wrote about how I have changed since HS, trying to separate myself form my HS GPA, and also wrote about my business.

Some research/startup work with a professor at my current college.

I think you have a good chance with the solid college gpa and great ECs. I hope you do get in.

Thanks. Does anyone have an idea what kind of affect my bad HS GPA will have? Hopefully my college 4.0 will offset it.

I dont know how this board will take it but.... I think you will get in because I was accepted this year(CSoM) and my GPA is a 82/100 which i think translates into a 2.7... so there you go.. u had a 2.8 which went up to a 3.8 in college which proves that you can do college level work.

i think the fact that you're doing so well now indicates that you are fit for their school. you've got a good shot.

Simmon I think you might have gotten your GPA calculation wrong, unless you are talking about your high school GPA.

A 82 out of a 100 is about a 3.28 on a 4.00 scale. Just take what you have and divide that by 25. If you have a 100, then after dividing that by 25, you'll get 4.00 for example. Furthermore, BC doesn't look at applications with a college GPA lower than a 3.0:

"The transfer admission process at Boston College is higly selective. A minimum G.P.A. of a 3.0 is required to submit a transfer application. Increased competition in recent cycles has resulted in mean grade point averages higher than 3.6 among admitted students. "

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am a senior in HS. I applied for Fall 08 at BC CSoM and received an acceptance letter today to my surprise. It was totally unexpected.

Collegeboard says BC gives 100% of financial need. That's impressive. So does that mean that I basically pay what my EFC is? Or does the CSS Profile lower/raise it?

If you really want to transfer, you might be better off waiting a year and applying as a sophomore so your HS grades won't matter as much. That said, you have a very strong HS record, so you definitely, definitely have a shot.

I'm applying to BC as well as a transfer...hope to see you at orientation!

jayvanbuiten, the CSS tends to raise the amount you have to pay- my EFC is about $20,000 less than the amount BC wants me to pay (the CSS profile sucks )

wow. thank you for ruining my day arachnophobia . I was hoping to pay somewhere around my EFC.

But do you think it will help that the CSS Profile says all my siblings go to private school, and my parent's are in considerable debt due to my dad's small business? These are things the FAFSA did not ask. Also, the housing market has crashed pretty hard, especially where I live so hopefully the value of my house wont affect me that much.

How much did other people get from BC?

you'd have to tell BC about your situation and see if they will fit your need. everything fin aid app is generic unless you actually plead your case.

There isn't anything special about my case that WASNT on my profile, I'm just saying that maybe the profile wont hurt me as much as it hurts other people because it brought up good points that the FAFSA didn't, such as my parents are in debt and my siblings go to private school. Even though it's obviously "generic", my Profile EFC hopefully wont be as far away from my FAFSA EFC as other people.
