Hey, I am in the Honors program and have taken 4 years of spanish in high school, I was wondering for the Arts and Sciences college, if I still had a foreign language requirement or because I'm in honors or have taken 4 years of spanish am i exempt?

The foreign language requirement for A&S applies to honors students the same way as everyone else. You need to DEMONSTRATE proficiency at the "intermediate" level.

Simply taking 4 years of Spanish in HS doesn't show how well you know the language, because there is so much variability in teachers, curriculum, etc. So BC requires you to take a standardized test to demonstrate proficiency. If you took the AP exam and scored a 3 or better, or if you took the SAT subject test in Spanish and scored a 550 or better, you have demonstrated the required level of proficiency.

If you haven't taken either of those tests (or did take one but did not achieve the minimum score), you will need to take BC's placement exam on-line. If you score well enough on that test, you will be deemed to have completed the foreign language requirement.

Wow thanks a lot! I'm wondering though if you do very well on this test, does it place you out of your requirement? Or does it just place you into a harder spanish course?

If you test high enough to be "placed" into a higher-level Spanish class (above the "intermediate" level, as BC defines it), you don't have to take it. Your performance on the placement exam just shows that you already have sufficient knowledge of Spanish and thus you have satisfied the foreign language requirement.

For those who have taken it, how difficult was the spanish language placement exam? I have taken 4 years of spanish, but for my senior year, AP Spanish wouldnt't fit into my schedule. I am just now reviewing verb tenses and some rules and realized that lots has slipped my mind...

My daughter took the exam after taking AP Spanish. She thought it was very hard. It tests all modalities of languague - Speaking reading listening and writing. So you listen to passages in Spanish, write and speak. You read passages in Spanish and answer questions and write.

Her spanish teacher prepared the class well, but it was very hard.

BC requires/recommends 4 years of language for admission. Does this mean 4 years in the same language or will three years in one language and one year in another suffice?
