I applied EA to BC, and got this email from a BC student. I don't want to be that grammar ho, but this was pretty embarrassing to read. Are BC students generally bad at writing, or did I just get the one who forgot spellcheck?






AWKWARD IN GENERAL: When I get asked why I decided I wanted to come to Boston College, it wasn't the great academics or the proximity to Boston (both of which are great), it was the fact that everyone at Boston College loved to be here, and if they loved it so much why wouldn't I love it?

AN VS. AND: I loved that everyone had so much school spirit and had pride in being and eagle.

THERE/THEIR: I especially think that this is evident on football game days here at BC when everyone wears there super-fan shirt.

NEED SEMI-COLONS: I am personally involved in Appalachia, a service organization that takes trips to various community projects in the Appalachia region over spring break, the Student Admissions Program, which helps many perspectives students to get a look at Boston College, Irish Society, Mendel Society, which is an organization for all of the pre-health students at Boston College, and Peer Health Exchange, which is a program that sends college students to public schools in the area to teach a health curriculum that the high schools can't afford to provide for their students.

RUN-ON + THERE/THEIR: Although many students have changed there majors once coming to BC, I have not, I am very interested in becoming a doctor or a research biologist and I really enjoy my science heavy course load.

WHAT IS IT: make sure that you are pursing what is it that you really want to do.

QUESTION?: You are by no means required to come to Boston College with a major, but is there anything in particular that you are interested in studying.

C! OLLEGE: Are there any clubs that you are interested in, or do you have any interests that you are thinking about continuing in c! ollege?

You can always email me and hope to see better grammar. =P Also, I don't believe spellcheck would have corrected those errors since the words are spelled correctly. If only there was an effective grammar check.

I think you got one that was in a hurry and one thing led to another. I hope it wasn't a form letter :-) BC students are generally average at writing, but given enough time they often get it right.

In my classes, I have noticed that people employ the word "like" heavily to articulate their views.

Don't be so quick to judge. I've met a fair number of students who only recently moved to the US with questionable english proficiency. Perhaps the letter was written by such a student, if not a fully international student.
