hey everyone! I went to boco today! I was amazed at how small the campus was. But being in such a quaint school really made it feel like home already. I asked quite a few questions that were answered. If anyone wants to know details, feel free to email me. But in short, I got very good vibes from the school. The dorms seemed nice. One thing I know people were curious about were sophomore promos. But just so everyone is aware... if you are about to be put on probation, you're most likely going to know it based on the effort you have been putting forth.

For the dance audition, I was told that it's a jazz combination (From GUYS AND DOLLS I believe) that will really assess your natural abilities. From what I gathered they are not expecting kids to be perfect. But how can you assess their talents without challenging them? Thats why they're really pushing the kids. It's probably also helpful in finding out who out of a group will rise to a challenge, and who will get frustrated and give up. So to future auditioners... just do your best and you'll be fine. Dont get too flustered. I enjoy dancing, so even if it is a challenge, I look at it as an oppurtunity for me to grow. If you just keep that frame of mind, the dance audition will not be a debacle.

My daughter just got back from the Chicago Unifieds. The Boco dance audition was the highlight of the week! My daughter forgot her headshot and ran up 13 flights of stairs to the hotel room to get it, and then back down. I followed later down the stairwell to see if she was alive and couldn't believe that the audition room door was wide open and some parents were sitting outside watching the whole thing.... so of course I joined them. The instructor was one of those people who was so joyful that she made everyone feel like it was fun to die. It was a grueling workout with a million combinations to remember, yet the teacher made even the beginners feel at ease. She told them that their dance level did not effect their acceptance. I believe it was partly for placement/general assessment and mostly to see what their endurance was like under such conditions. When she was adding the 50th combination to the third dance , I heard a Dad say, "and I thought my going to Harvard was hard!" Dispite the intense workout, I think all of the kids, even beginners, had a great time, and surprised themselves that they could keep up.
Surprisingly, the BOCO dance audition was much harder than CMU.
Our feeling about BOCO is that the kids will learn A LOT, and equally in all three disciplines. The down side is that it is a conservatory, NOT in a big University, where you can't switch to x,y,z later and not lose school credits.

My d auditioned in NY and loved the dance audition! I believe it was challenging, but she enjoyed it. Boston has been at the top of her list since our visit this past summer. She is anxiou to hear from them.

I'm auditioning for BoCo on March 6th, I'm really excited! I'm pretty much in the same boat as MTGeek, as it's the only one I'm auditioning for, I grew up in Boston, gonna go to a community college and try again next year if I don't get in etc. etc. I'm kinda nervous about the dance audition because it's my weakest aspect.

CaroleElla- Do not worry about the dance audition...My d went through this audition in NY (she is INaSpotlight...I finally got my own "name"!!) Dance is her weakest. She has taken private and group the past two years just to get some dance under her belt. She said she enjoyed the dance part...it was difficult, but the person who worked with her was wonderful. She ended up feeling good about it. She was told that voice and monologue play a bigger role in the acceptance anyway. Good luck! You will do great. By the way...we loved Boston!!! What a great city!

That's good to hear. I mean, I obviously like to dance, but I've only taken a year of dance classes. And I know what you mean about Boston, I was in Orlando for four months at UCF and missed it sooooo much, even though I was in sunny warm Florida! And my friend who goes to Skidmore, which is only a four hour drive away, misses it a ton too. Why is Boston so awesome? Heehee

The dance audition at BoCo really IS fun. I auditioned on the 24th of February, and I am NOT a dancer by any standards, but I really had a great time - and what a workout! I was sore for like two days! You do have to do an over-the-shoulder roll (aka backwards somersault) and there are a few difficult technical things. BUT the thing they look for in non-dancers is a lot of energy and ACTING. So do your best to learn the combination, but once it's your turn to perform in, don't concentrate too hard on merely remembering the steps. The steps will come easier if you have an active character life going on throughout the combination. Just a tip!

YES, the dance is very challenging -- however, the woman teaching it makes you feel very very comfortable and is good about letting you know that it will not make/break you if you kick with your left foot first instead of your right.
