By the way, an interesting "stat" for CMU is that they break down the stats for admitted students by their individual colleges within the university and for the College of Fine Arts:
Mid SATs CR 590-680 M 610-710 Avg. GPA: 3.54

I had thought that that was what I said as far as my NYU acceptence goes. I got a letter saying I got in and I had said that I don't want to be considered for the other studios beside Cap, so then I got a letter saying that I didn't get into Cap.

I didn't mean to infer that any shmoe with a 1.0 GPA could get into a school based on talent. I know that the student must have grades and scores within reason, but I do know people who have had less than stellar grades get into these schools when they clearly should not have.

Anyone ever heard of being recommended to the Conservatory Diploma Program for dance at BOCO because of low GPA and SAT?

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but it's a big, wide world, so maybe one of you will come forth to commiserate or even offer advice. So here goes:

Back in August, my D and I sat down at the computer and had her SAT scores sent to the colleges/conservatories to which she planned to apply/audition, including Boston Conservatory. My D then applied online to BoCo about a month ago and was thus able to check online to see what materials are still outstanding. Guess what's missing? Her SATs, of course. I called the BoCo admissions office and spoke to an extremely nice gentleman, who tried to find them. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I called College Board and they assured me that the scores were processed and sent out to BoCo (on a disk, mailed through the US Postal Service) on August 28, which was about two weeks after we paid electronically. When they learned that BoCo never got the scores, the College Board lady said that she would "launch an investigation" and someone would call me in seven days. Well, 7 days went by. Worried about the scores getting to Boston C before the 12/1/07 deadline, I went online and paid $9.50 again, figuring it was money well spent if the scores would just get where they needed to be. But when I went online today to check, the scores still had not been sent!! I called College Board and they said it can take them up to four weeks to process a request, so that the disk could go out (this time) at the end of November. Eeek! If it goes out that late, it may not make it in time for the BoCo 12/1 deadline. So off I go again to the phone to call BoCo's admissions office. Another very nice guy tells me it's no big deal, that we should just get the scores there when we can and and all of that. I ask you guys (more experienced MT and college auditions/admissions moms and dads): Is it worth it to pay the $26 rush fee to have these things sent out in a hurry? The College Board lady did promise that if I decided to send 'em "rush," she would not charge me for the second $9.50 score I tried to send awhile ago but did not go out. Anyone venture an opinion? Thanks!

Can you check at your Ds High School... often the SAT scores are on their transcripts... if they are you can get the high school to mail them to BoCo...

Several things...
First, BOCO does NOT require SATs scores but it is a good idea to send them along but these are not required for admission (unlike most schools).

Second, when most colleges state an application deadline, the most important thing is that your own part of the application makes the deadline cut off. However, since it takes time to compile everyone's files, it is OK if a recommendation or score report comes in a little past the deadline as long as your own part does not. Obviously if a file is not complete, they cannot evaluate it but it need NOT be complete by the app deadline. I even recall at auditions the first weekend in March at BOCO, as we signed in, they would inform each applicant if anything was missing in their file. My D's was complete but this implies that even at that date, they were willing to get the missing pieces past the initial deadline (not counting the app you fill out in order to even get an audition).

Third, the person at BOCO already told you not to worry if the SATs get there when they get there and I would believe him. This relates to point #2 above.

Fourth, I don't think the rush scores will make a difference here and in this particular case, are not worth it. It is frustrating to pay again as something was messed up, possibly on BOCO's end.

Lastly, sorry BwayRocks....while many transcripts do have standardized test scores on them, these CANNOT stand in for OFFICIAL score reports sent by the College Board and so I want to point that out to anyone reading this. It is true that BOCO would have at least that in their hands but colleges do want official score reports.

The situation is frustrating but I think you are truly fine here. I'm talking this particular situation at this particular school and not to be transferred to other situations or colleges generally (though point #2 is a general rule of thumb).

Thanks, soozievt! I appreciate your input a great deal. I, too, thought SAT scores were optional at BoCo, but the online "where am I in the process?" tracker clearly states that her SAT scores are missing, so that led me to believe that they were required. I think your advice to just be patient and hope that they make it there is the best course of action to take. They should certainly have arrived by the time my kid auditions there in February!!

NMR-Our SAT scores never made it to BoCo, either. They were noted to been sent in September. College Board is investigating and will get back to me. Very Interesting!!

NMR--this exact same thing happened to us last year with BOCO. DO NOT send RUSH scores- some school- I think it might have been BOCO- said they do NOT accept RUSH scores! I was shocked. Might have been somewhere else. BOCO does not have an efficient system for putting the scores in to their computer system even though they might, in fact, have your scores. You do have a copy of the SAT scsore receipt being sent, so I would call BOCO, get the nice gentleman's name, and fax them your copy of your SAT receipt. That way BOCO can put it in your D's file to show the scores have been sent by you.( Can you tell I am married to an Toorney- he say make and keep copies of everything, even communications)

My D auditioned at Chicago Unifieds and they had her scores before the deadline. Just call every 2 weeks or so to "check in". And RELAX about this- there is so much more to stress over, and you seem very well organized and informed from your prior posts.

ttmom, I actually talked to someone in admissions at BoCo and he said that they DO accept rush scores, but he urged me not to stress about this and just to wait until the second set of scores I sent (a week or so ago) arrive. As far as College Board "investigating," well, I thought that was likely to end up as an unproductive/unfruitful road to go down, as it was clear that the BoCo scores were processed and sent (at the end of August) at the same time as we sent scores to another handful of schools, and all of those got them. (I know ... I called each and every one and checked. Figured if I had to resend scores, I wanted to do them all at once.) My guess is that CB sent them (in the case of BoCo, on a computer disk) and they either did not arrive or were mislaid once they got there. Either way, the admissions people at BoCo don't have 'em! I *LOVE* the idea of sending Boston Conservatory the receipt that shows I sent the scores, except I did doodle on the receipt while I was on the phone queue waiting to speak to my College Board rep. Guess I will send it anyhoo. Thanks for the great suggestions, everyone, and for the support. Interesting that someone else's scores also didn't arrive ...

Unfortunately, no. The people in the admissions office at BoCo said they don't have 'em, and the College Board people promised to "launch an investigation" and call me back within 5 work days. Nada. Nothing. No calls. As I said above, being cynical (read: realistic!), I knew that call would never come, so I ordered another set of scores sent the same day I called CB. Those still have not arrived, according to the online application tracker thingie at BoCo. However, as a result of the excellent suggestion made on this list, I printed out the receipt I got from CB when I ordered both sets of scores and sent that, along with a letter explaining what happened, to BoCo's admissions office, and asked that the letter and receipt become part of my daughter's admissions file. I am not sure what else we can do! It would be a waste of money and time, I think, to spend another $26 to try to rush the scores to Boston, when the others are presumably on their way. In addition, a very nice gentleman at BoCo's admissions office assured me that the scores will get there and not to worry about them. Of course, I do worry.
