Boston Conservatory Admissions Questions

I would like to know if anyone was placed in the Conservatory Diploma Program for Dance rather than the BFA. Also, do they offer need based aid? Tuition is really expensive, even the acceptance deposit, which for most schools is a few hundred dollars. BOCO's deposit is $1,000!

Can you elaborate about the Conservatory Diploma Program for Dance? I did not know that this was an option and I can't find anything about it on the BOCO website. It does appear that a diploma program does exist for musicians, but I don't see anything for dancers.

I didn't see anything as well on the site and only saw that this was for musicians as well. I would like to ehar whether or not any prosecpective students had any knowledge of this?

I honestly don't know about the diploma program.

You were asking if they offer need based aid. Boston Conservatory offers need based aid, at least for its degree programs anyway. Having received a need based aid package, I thought it was pretty good.

This is only a rumor that I may have picked up reading somewhere on this board, so take it for what it's worth, but what I remember is that someone reported that at an admissions session they actually stated that if you are applying as a freshman female soprano, there would be no aid offered. Idk if that referred to need-based aid or merit or talent scholarships.

I've never heard that, but given that probably there are more sopranos auditioning than anything else, they may not feel the need to offer extra $$ as enticements to come. However, my assumption would be that would be referring to talent scholarships only, and that any academic scholarships, or needs-based aid would be a totally separate consideration.

I auditioned at BoCo as a soprano and they only gave me money for one year. I know another girl who is attending who got a pretty generous package for all four years.

I got this from US News about BOCO. Does anyone know if these figures are correct?

^^The information on USNews is incorrect. USNews has the acceptance rate listed at 100%. I have seen it. BOCO doesn't accept 100% of applicants. We wish, LOL.

I can tell you for the BFA in MT program itself, when my D applied/accepted for the class of 2009, I recall in the info session on the audition date, hearing of an approx. 10% admit rate for that program (which at the time made me smile as it was higher than some other schools and gave me a glimmer of hope, LOL, albeit it is a very low admit rate.) Not sure the admit rate for the other programs that BOCO offers.

Another thing wrong with the USNews data for BOCO is that it has the acceptances the same as enrollment and they surely do not have a 100% yield. They take MORE applicants than spots available as they do not yield all those who are offered a spot. I have a vague recollection in my D's year of something like 1200 MT applicants, accepting 120 to yield 60 freshmen. This all could have changed in the past three years. Also, even with 60 freshmen, the class sizes dwindled in MT to about 25-30 by senior year, if I recall at that time.

Just to try to come up with where those crazy figures came from...They might take 155 total acceptances if you count Theatre, Dance, and Music Divisions? That would make the whole undergrad program of about 500-600 after Sophomore promotionals, which would make sense I guess. Other than that, the numbers do seem nuts. Freshman classes were very big the past two years because just about everyone offered DID accept (at least much more than in the past), but they only offered to a small percentage who auditioned. Probably close to what Susan mentioned.

While the 155 might be right...
USNews is just in error as it ALSO says 100% admit rate (number applied = number accepted).
It ALSO has that the number accepted to the Conservatory is the same as the number enrolled which is a 100% yield, a major rarity for an entire school. Not sure the reason for the error but otherwise USNews' data is often more accurate.

does anyone know the approximate male acceptance rate? i would guess it to be CONSIDERABLY higher than that for female applicants because of the small number of men who audition.

i was told by the admissions department that BoCo almost never gives out full tuition talent-based scholarships for MT because it is such a competetive department. They do give out some merit scholarships, but we know very few who got much.
